crude. Based on the writings of Plasencia and Chirino, are the remarks
The Spaniards were the first to colonize the Philippines. They traveled
along the seas of Asia for the reason of spice trading and promoting
Christianity. They wrote accounts about their expeditions and history as they
traveled, just like Plasencia’s and Chirino’s accounts. These accounts serve
as primary sources, for they have witnessed it in person. However, ancient
Filipinos labeled as savage, uncivilized, and crude by the Spaniards contradict
what Plasencia and Chirino have written. For instance, it made me believe
that their claims about our ancestors are void.
Their claim of Filipinos being savage is not valid. In Chirino’s account, it
was written that Filipinos are polite, have good breeding, and are courteous in
their words and action. Moreover, they have learned and practice removing
caps or cloth in their heads to show respect to their superiors. Using of
pronouns is also observed even though they are pretty equal. It only proves
that Filipinos were gentle and civilized. In addition to this, According to
Plasencia’s account, ancient Filipinos had their concept of government called
barangay that ruled by a datu. Furthermore, they also have various systems
and laws, such as whoever insulted the daughter or wife of the datu shall
receive punishments. It was proven that they were uncivilized regarding their
land because the ground where they lived is divided into the whole barangay.
Aside from those who do not reside in that specific barangay will acquire no
benefit from it unless they bought land or inherited it. On the other hand,
Chirino’s account stated that ancient Filipinos have their alphabet that
consists of three vowels but is equivalent to five, which is written with a
particular rule to consider and twelve consonants. Also, their writing tools
were iron points as a pen and reeds and palm leaves as papers, but, soon
they have adopted to write in an article with a sharpened quill that they
learned from the Spaniards.
In conclusion, Spaniards might be advanced among the ancient
Filipinos, but it doesn’t mean that Filipinos can’t progress independently. It is
proven and stated in the accounts of Plasencia and Chirino that even before
the Spaniards came, they already had established their government, own
beliefs, terms of courtesy, etc., proving that their claims were not valid. Also,
they have labeled ancient Filipinos savage, uncivilized, and crude because
they were more technologically advanced. Ancient Filipinos were compared to
other more developed countries, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the
Philippines, during that time was undeveloped. Lastly, the said claims might
be formed by biased judgment since they see Filipinos as low class or slaves.
