Sustainable Engineering
Part 1: Sustainability: Introduction, evolution
S3 ECE γ
Relevance of the course
Who is an engineer ?
Design products or services
With the help of technology
To improve lifestyle of humankind
Why sustainable engineering ?
Are the resources infinite ?
Are we the only generation to live and consume
the resources ?
Are humans the only part of earth’s biosphere ?
Can the environment bear any amount of
damage caused by human activity ?
Sustainable Engineering , S3 ECE, RSET
We are part of the problem but we can be the part of
solution as well !!!

Sustainability
“The development that meets society’s present needs without compromising
the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. (Brundtland
Report in 1987)
Sustainability is the ability to achieve continuing economic prosperity while
protecting the natural systems of the planet and providing a high quality of
life for its people.
Sustainable Engineering , S3 ECE, RSET
Evolution of sustainability concept
Industrial revolution by the 20th century
Changes in lifestyle, progress in various fields of development
Exponential increase in consumption of natural resources
Unpredictable and eccentric climate variations
Realised that
Harmony between ecology and prosperity is needed!
In 1983, the United Nations tapped former Norwegian prime
minister Gro Harlem Brundtland to run the new World Commission
on Environment and Development
Led to Bruntland report called “Our Common Future”
