IMPLICATIONS OF MEDIA AND INFORMATION

Improves quality of life

No one can deny this since we've all have been
exposed to media and information, together
with its advantage of making life easier.
Whenever our family plans to go to unfamiliar
destinations, Google Maps has been of great
help since it automatically gives the directions
and time before arriving. Also, our family loves
to travel, and whenever my mom sees a new
tourist spot to go to, we immediately plan
ahead of time and arrange our schedules to
avoid conflict. Lastly, as a student, Google Keep
lets me access my notes anytime on any device
connected to my account.

Promotes greater
political participation
As a first-time voter this coming May 2022,
social media has brought political awareness to
me, specifically Twitter since access to news
identities has become faster and easier.
Although not everything I see is factual, it has
motivated me to become more information
literate and fight against fake news spreading
over platforms like Facebook. Also, listening to
the radio news has enabled me to know our
local government's pandemic response and
other transparency issues.

Hones individuals as
cohesive social units
I, myself, am an ambivert. However, the
pandemic has inclined me more as an introvert
due to the prolonged isolation. Though it is not
difficult for me to start a conversation on
Twitter threads and a TikTok comment section,
there is an evident difference from how I
interact personally since communicating
behind the screen is more comfortable. I have
created long-term friendships with people
outside Dumaguete and the Philippines since
quarantine season. Because we have the same
personality and interests, we immediately
clicked and maintained our communication
through Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, or
Discord.
You Are Not Alone
Watching Disney Channel and listening to my lola’s old
radio was part of my childhood routine. As I grew up, media
and information continued to progress dynamically — along
with its advantages and disadvantages to my current
generation.
Ever since the time when almost everything can be
done using our smartphones such as watching movies and
series, I started to spend more time in front of my cellphone
screen or personal computer compared to the television. I
get to encounter success stories and posts along with
flawless beauty standards, which led my insecurities to
worsen. However, our generation is also known for breaking
societal stereotypes, and advocacies concerning such all
over the internet has encouraged me that I am not alone.
Seeing encouraging posts boost my self-confidence,
reminding me that the digital world can be toxic in some
ways but there will always be a bright side in everything we
encounter.
