DESIGN PRACTICE NOTE
WATER INGRESS INTO SUBSTATION PITS
L1-NAM-INS-013 Version: 1 Effective from: 31 July 2013

1. Purpose
The purpose of this DPN is to develop a process to prevent the ingress of water into
substation pits due to seepage where pits are located in tidal areas or in charged ground
below the natural water table.

2. Background & Issue

Water was found in the pit beneath the 22KV switchgear at the Sunbury Substation. The
sump in the corner of the pit inside the substation was fully submerged and approximately
20mm covered the floor of the pit.
The conduit penetrations into the pit did not appear to be leaking. The construction joint
along the base and the wall of the pit was visibly “rough” and it appears that this could be
the source of the seepage into the pit.
A small amount of water was evident in the pit beneath the rectifier at the Diggers Rest
Substation. There was some evidence of seepage from the spare sealed conduit leading
into the pit and appeared to be coming in from outside the substation.
The presence of water in Substation Pits has the potential to damage assets, cause
serious injury to staff and hinder the visual inspections of electrical assets.

3. The Requirement
In general it is necessary for pits to be waterproofed. If the pit is located in a tidal area or in
charged ground below the water table or there is a potential for water ingress then
additional water proofing may be applied. The following processes shall be implemented in
order to ensure adequate water proofing is provided:
 Pits shall be installed using in-situ concrete with no construction joints, or
 Hydophilic waterstops shall be used to seal construction joints.
 Joints in conduits and penetrations into the pits shall be adequately sealed in
accordance with the manufacturer’s waterproofing recommendations.
 Ensure conduits are graded away from Substations where practicable.
 An additive shall be used in the concrete mix to provide non-absorptive properties and
shall be used in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Designers should also consider the use of a mezzanine type floor to ensure pits and
conduit penetrations into a sub station are not subject to water ingress.
Note: Where a pit is below the water table or in a tidal area, the potential for uplift due to
buoyancy shall be considered and allowed for in the design.

4. Type Approval
A Type Approval process is not applicable.

5. MTM Requirements
The principles of this Design Practice Note are to be incorporated into the MTM
requirements for Substations.
