Homework 6
Due: Friday, April 28, 2017

Answer each question on a separate spreadsheet. Clearly document all answers. Save your
spreadsheets in one document and submit it in Moodle by 8AM Friday April 28.

1. A medical study involves subjects in the following categories:

Blood Group A O B AB
Healthy 7 20 3 9
Ill 3 10 2 6
a) If a subject is selected at random, what is the probability of getting someone with type A
blood?
b) What is the probability of choosing someone who is healthy?
c) If 2 people are selected what is the probability of choosing someone who is healthy, followed
by someone who is ill?

2. A particular drug therapy is known to have a 70% cure rate. For a drug trial consisting of 40
patients construct the Binomial distribution and the cumulative distribution. Graph both
distributions.
Find the probability that:
a) 20 people are cured.
b) More than 30 people are cured.
c) Between 17 and 25 people (inclusive) are cured.
d) 10 people or fewer are cured.
e) How many people do you expect to be cured?

3. Suppose the number of typographical errors on a page of a textbook has a Poisson distribution
with average λ = ½. Create the chart for the distribution and the cumulative distribution.
Experiment to see how many scores you need to include. (Keep 4 decimal places for the values
of the probabilities.) Draw the 2 graphs. Use the charts to determine the following probabilities:
a) Exactly 2 errors.
b) Fewer than 2 errors.
c) At least 1 error.
