NARRATIVE REPORT ON READ-A-THON CONTEST

The advent of modern technology has undeniably affected the interests and likes of the
people especially the young minds. The benefit of having something in a snap of a finger adds to
their apt indolence to give more time and effort. One conspicuous effect, though reasons may
vary, is children’s lack of interest in reading. For some, reading is not fun. In an era when instant
is a trend, reading is boring. But this should not be the case for reading is one of the fundamental
skills one should efficiently develop. Reading is important for a variety of reasons. First, it
develops the mind. As what quotation said, “Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the
body.” Our mind is a muscle thus it needs to be exercised. The ability to understand and decode
messages nourishes our brain. Aside from this, reading also helps us discover and unfold
learning. It broadens one’s imagination and widens one’s horizon. It is a skill that can be used as
a weapon in this battle called life.

To accentuate the essence of reading especially to the pupils, as a support to the

celebration of National Reading Month with its theme “Bawat Bata Bumabasa Sa Kabila ng
Hamon ng Pandemya,”, Guiset Elementary School held various activities that aimed to promote
love for reading and to celebrate the diversity of learners and culture through reading.

As a kick off to the month-long celebration of the National Reading Month,

dissemination and brief discussion of its theme and scheduled activities was conducted by Mrs.
Elizabet, the School Filipino Coordinator, and Mr Eduard T. Santiago Jr, the school English
Coordinator with the help of their school head Ma’am Jennifer DG. Ferry. The following were
the assigned activities for each grade level; On the spot reading, Interpretative Reading Contest
for Grade II, Creative Story Telling for Grade III, Story-retelling for Grade IV , Tell in Tandem-
Interactive Storytelling for Grade V and Spelling Bee for Grade VI. The students that win the
said contest for every grade level will move to zonal elimination. Aside from these, there was
also a “Dugtungang Pagbasa” for Grade 4 to 6 and Reading Program/Project Exhibit and
Presentation for school entry.

Someone said that “Everyone is a reader; some just haven't found their favorite book
yet.” The love for reading, just like other kinds of love should not be forced but should be
cultivated. Let’s find and create ways for the pupils to fall in love in reading.
