Curriculum Framework changes to

Cambridge Primary Mathematics (0096)

Dear Teacher

As you may be aware, Cambridge International has a new Curriculum Framework for Cambridge
Primary Mathematics (0096) and our new Cambridge Primary Maths resources* have been rewritten to
reflect the learning objectives in this Curriculum Framework. We are working with Cambridge
International to gain endorsement for this forthcoming series.

The Cambridge Primary Mathematics Curriculum Framework (0096) is now organised into three
main strands:
1. Number, 2. Geometry and Measure and 3. Statistics and probability

Geometry and Measure have now been combined to form one strand and Data Handling has been
renamed Statistics and Probability to better reflect the mathematics content. The Algebra strand begins
in Lower Secondary, but learners will still work with equations at primary level in the ‘counting and
sequences’ sub-strand of Number.

There are now fewer learning objectives, with many of the original learning objectives merged rather
than reduced, with improved progression both within each stage and between stages. Our new editions
of Cambridge Primary Mathematics use a spiral curriculum model to make sure that there is both
curriculum coverage and careful progression of concepts and skills over the stage and between years.
Each stage is divided into three terms and each term contains six units: three number units per term
and three non-number units.

Thinking and working mathematically


In the new Curriculum Framework, all the previous problem solving learning objectives have been
removed and replaced with four pairs of thinking and working mathematically characteristics. The
overall aim is to focus on the characteristics of thinking and working mathematically:
Specialising and generalising
Conjecturing and convincing
Characterising and classifying
Critiquing and improving
Thinking and Working Mathematically (TWM) is an important approach to teaching and learning that
has been incorporated throughout our new editions. We want our learners to actively engage with their
learning of mathematics, so TWM activities are highlighted throughout the Learner’s Book, providing
different types of problems and rich activities, so that the learners see this questioning and reasoning
approach as an important way of working mathematically.

Mental strategies
Explicit mental strategies learning objectives have been removed from the Cambridge Primary and
Lower Secondary Curriculum Frameworks. However, working mentally remains an important feature in
the updated curriculum framework which aims to be less prescriptive about the specific strategies that
should be learnt and practiced by learners at each stage.
