easy for us to learn and understand.

{And We have certainly made the Qur'an easy for remembrance, so is

Every Muslim dreams of being able to understand the words of their Lord
when reciting the Quran or hearing it recited.
We designed this book to help you take a large step towards realising that
dream.
In total 300 words are covered in this book which account for over 70% of
all the words in the Quran.
Disclaimer: Although the data found here has been produced and processed from third party
sources believed to be reliable, no guarantee can be made for complete accuracy. . Therefore
statistics about word frequencies should be taken as a very close approximation. In the case of
verbs, conjugations have been considered together.

Introduction to Arabic
In this section we go through the Arabic Letters and how to pronounce
them, the extra alphabetical symbols as well as the different written
forms of each letter.
This section will help you recognise different letters and symbols and is
a first step towards reading Arabic words.
If you are not familiar with the Arabic letters and pronunciation it is
advised to go through this with a qualified teacher.
Further down we go through the classification of words in Arabic.

Arabic Letters
There are 28 consonants or sounds in Arabic, 18 of which are the same
or similar to English consonants or sounds. The following letters are
pronounced almost exactly how they are pronounced in English.

Arabic Long Vowels
Arabic has both long vowels and short vowels. The three long vowels
are ‫ ي‬,‫ و‬,‫ ا‬and are known as the letters of madd.
− The letter alif ) ‫ ( ا‬is used to make the sound ‘aa’. E.g ‫ = َب‬baa
− The letter waaw ) ‫ ( و‬is used to make the sound ‘uu’. E.g ‫= بُو‬
buu
− The letter yaa’ ) ‫ ( ي‬is used to make the sound ‘ii’ . E.g ‫ = ِب‬bii

Arabic Short Vowels

Like in English, Arabic words have vowels. However in Arabic vowels
are not letters that are part of the word.
Instead they are three short vowels signs that are written above and
below the letters. They are :
− ‫ فَ ْت َحة‬- fatHa = ََ which is placed above a letter and is

pronounced as a short ‘a’ following the letter. E.g. ‫ = ب‬ba .

− ‫ – َك ْسَرة‬kasra = َِ which is placed below a letter and is
pronounced as a short ‘i’ following the letter. E.g. ‫ب‬ ِ = bi
َ – Damma = َ
− ‫ض َّمة‬ ُ which is placed above a letter and is
pronounced as a short ‘u’ following the letter. E.g. ‫ = ب‬bu

Arabic Short Vowels

‫ – ُس ُكون‬Sukoon = ْ when a letter is not followed by a short vowel
a small circle known as a sukoon is written above the letter. E.g ‫ب‬
ْ
‫ – تَ ْن ِوي‬Tanween = ْْْ are double vowels and make an

additional ‘n’ sound along with the original sound of the short vowel.
E.g . ‫ = ب‬ban , ‫ = ب‬bun, ‫ = ب‬bin
‫ – َشدَّة‬Shaddah = َ is used when 2 of the same letters are directly

next to each other, and the first has a sukoon over it, to merge them
together.
E.g. ‫َشدَّة → َش ْد َدة‬

Extra-Alphabetical Symbols
In addition to above-mentioned letters, there are additional non-

alphabetic letters and symbols:
‫ – ََهَْزة‬Hamzah = ‫ ء‬is used to represent a consonant sound in Arabic.

It is written above or below an ‘alif ‫ ا‬and above the letters waw ‫و‬
and yaa ‫ي‬.
E.g ‫أ إ ؤ ئ‬
‫ َِد‬- Madd = ~ is written above alif to represent the sound of
hamaza followed by a elongated long vowel alif.

E.g. = aaaa

In addition to above-mentioned letters, there are additional non-

alphabetic letters and symbols:
ْ ‫ = ََهَْزةُ الْ َو‬Hamzatul Wasl = ‫ٱ‬. The sign of hamazatul wasal is

ْ‫ص‬
written above an alif to indicate the sound of the hamaza is dropped
and the sound before the hamza is assimilated into the sound after
hamaza.
‫ = اَلِف َخْن َج ِريَّة‬Alif Khanjariyyah = ٰ‫ـ‬. This is a sign of short alif and
represents the long vowel alif in pronunciation.

There are also another 2 letters which appear only at the end of
words.

ُ ْ َ ‫ اَل‬- Alif Maqsurah = ‫ى‬. The letter is shaped like a Yaa ‫ي‬
‫ص َورة‬ ‫ق‬ ِ ‫ف‬
minus the two dots beneath it and makes the sound of an Alif. E.g
‫وسى‬
َ ُِ = Musaa
‫ ََتء َِ ْربُوطَة‬- taa' marbuuta = ‫ة‬. The letter is pronounced the same as
the letter taa , ‫ ت‬when it has a short vowel with it, and is
pronounced as a haa’ ‫ ه‬when it has a sukoon over it. When written a
taa’ marbuuta can take 2 shapes ‫ ة‬, ‫ة‬.

Written Letters
Each of the letters can take a different form when written
depending on where it is within a word. The following table shows
how each letter is written depending on if it comes at the
beginning, middle or end of a word.

Simple Classification of Arabic Words
Arabic words are classified into three main types:
ism ‫اسم‬ Noun
fiAl ‫فعل‬ Verb

Definition of an ism
An ism ‫ اسم‬is generally translated into English as being the equivalent of a Noun.
A noun is a word used to identify people, places, animals and objects. In other
words nouns are ‘naming words’.
Although the majority of asmaa (Plural of ism) in Arabic are equivalent to nouns in
English, there are other types of words that have their own categories in English,
but also fall into the ism category.
Some of the types of words that are not nouns in English but are still considered an
ism in Arabic are pronouns, adjectives, verbal nouns and adverbs
One of the distinguishing characteristics of Asmaa is that they are the only types of
words that either begin with definite particle ‫‘ ال‬al i.e ٰ‫ الٰكٰتٰاب‬, or end in tanween -
َ َ َ to indicate indefinite nouns i.e ٰ‫ كٰتٰاب‬،ٰ‫ كٰتٰاب‬،ٰ‫ كٰتٰابا‬a book.

Definition of a fiAl
A ''fiAl ‫ ’’ فعل‬is generally translated into English as being the
equivalent of a Verb.
Verbs are easier to remember as ’doing words’. They are words that
indicate an action and have a tense (i.e. past or present).
For example the two tenses of the verb ‘ to forgive ’ ‫ َغ َفَر‬are:

‫ غف ٰر‬- He forgave
ٰ‫ يغفر‬- He forgives
Verbs can also be used to give an instruction, command, or request.
ٰ‫ اغفرٰل‬- Forgive me

Definition of a Harf
A Harf ‫ َح ْرف‬is generally translated into English as being the equivalent of a
Particle.
There are a number of different English word categories that are considered as
being a Harf. They include, conjunctions, prepositions, particles of negation,
connectors, conditional particles, and more.
Harf ‫ َح ْرف‬is a word that does not make sense by itself. Its meaning is linked to
the word directly after it. For example :

The word ‘from’ does not make sense on it’s own. It needs a word after it to
complete its meaning.
