PERIODIC ASSESSMENT (April - 2021)

NAME : ______________________________________

GRADE : XII MARKS : 80

SUBJECT : BIOLOGY DURATION : 3 Hrs
ROLL NO: _____________ DATE : 29-04-2021

SECTION –A

1. Why is the offspring formed by asexual reproduction referred to as clone?

2. Define Juvenile Phase.

3. Name two animals that exhibit oestrus cycle.

4. Why is banana considered a good example of parthenocarpy?

5. Name an organism where cell division is itself a mode of reproduction.

6. Name the type of pollination in self-incompatible plants.

7. How many microsporngia are present in a typical anther of an angiosperm?

8. Why do pollen grains of some flowers trigger „sneezing‟ in some people?

9. Which are the three cells found in a pollen grain when it is shed at the three- celled
stage?

10. An anther with malfunctioning tapetum often fails to produce viable male
gametophytes. Give any one reason.

11. Assertion: Megaspore mother cell undergoes meiosis to produce four megaspores.

Reason: Megaspore mother cell and megaspores are both haploid.

12. Assertion: A pollen grains can withstand harsh conditions.

Reason: The exine of pollen grains is made up of sporopollenin which is resistant to

high temperatures, strong acids or alkali as well as enzymatic degradation.

13. Assertion: Binary fission occurs in single-celled animals.

Reason: Offspring show variation.

14. Assertion: Earthworm is monoecious.

Reason: Hermaphrodites bear both the sexes.

15. Read the following and answer any four questions

a. Name the type of reproduction in amoeba.

b. Mention two inherent characteristics of Amoeba and yeast that enable them to
reproduce asexually.
c. How the continuity of species is maintained generation after generations?
d. Why are no variations seen in clones? State two reasons.
e. Amoeba is a unicellular eukaryotic organism. Explain.

16. Read the following and answer any four questions

Fertilization is essential for production of seed, but in some angiosperms, seeds develop
without fertilization. Early development of embryo from the zygote is called embryogeny.
Nutrition for development is provided by endosperm. Zygote divides mitotically to form
proembryo.

a. Give an example of an angiosperm that produces seeds without fertilization.

b. Name that process.
c. Define fertilization.
d. In angiosperms, male gametes are formed by the division of
a. Microspore mother cell
b. Microspore
c. Generative cell
d. Vegetative cell
e. Explain the two ways by which seeds develop without fertilization.
SECTION B (9*2=18)
17. In the T.S of a mature anther given below, identify “a” and “b” and mention their
function.
18. Draw a diagram of pollen grain with germ tube and two male gametes.
(or)
If you squeeze a seed orange you might observe many embryos of different sizes? How
is it possible? Explain.

19. A non-biology person is quite shocked to know that apple is a false fruit, mango is a
true fruit and banana is a seedless fruit. As a biology student how would you satisfy this
person?
20. What is pericarp? Mention its functions.
21. Why should a bisexual flower be emasculated and bagged prior to artificial
pollination?
22. With which type of reproduction do we associate the reduction division? Analyse the
reasons for it.
23. If the chromosomes numbers in meiocytes of human beings, rat, elephant, rice,
butterfly and onion are 46,42,56, 24, 380 and 32 respectively. What will be the
chromosome numbers in gametes of these species?
24. Out of many papaya plants growing in your garden, only a few bear fruits. Give reason.

SECTION-C (5*3 = 15)

25. Differentiate between zoospore and zygote?

(or)
Pollen banks are playing a very important role in promoting plant breeding
programme the world over. How are pollens preserved in the pollen banks? Explian.
How are such banks benefitting our farmer? Write any two ways.

26. Unicellular organisms are immortal, whereas multicellular organisms are not. Justify?

27. The generative cell of a 2 celled pollen divides in the pollen tube but not in a 3-celled
pollen. Give reason.

28. Explain any two devices by which autogamy are prevented in flowering plants.
29. During an excavation assignment, scientists collected pollen grains of a plant
preserved in deeper layers in soil. Analyse the properties of pollen grains which help
in the fossilization.
SECTION-D (3*5=15)

30. Explain the events upto fertilization that occur in a flower after the pollen grain has
landed on its compatible stigma.
(or)
Enumerate the differences between asexual and sexual reproduction. Describe the
types of asexual reproduction exhibited by unicellular organisms.

31. a. Draw a schematic labelled diagram of a fertilized embryo sac of an angiosperm.

b. Describe the stages in embryo development in a dicot plant.
(or)
Explain the stages in sexual reproduction of an organism. Mention what major events
occur in each of them.

33. Rose plants produce large, attractive bisexual flowers but they seldom produce fruits.
On the other hand, Lady‟s finger produces plenty of fruits. Analyse the reasons for
failure of fruit formation in rose.
(or)

What are vegetative propagules? Name any four of them along with an example for
each.
