Violence against women has been called “the most pervasive yet least recognized human rights
abuse in the world.” Accordingly, the Second World Conference on Human Rights in Vienna in 1993
and the Fourth World Conference on Women in 1994 gave priority to this issue, which jeopardizes
women’s lives, bodies, psychological integrity and freedom. Violence against women is often known
as ‘gender-based’ violence because it partly stems from women’s subordinate status in society. As
such, teachers and school personnel need to have appreciation and understanding of Gender Based
Violence and Exploitation.

In line with this, PMRMS - North will uphold a Gender and Development training focusing on Gender
– Fair Language with the purpose of informing and enhancing teachers and staff’s knowledge about
gender-fair language whenever we interact or collaborate with our pupils and with the assurance of
applying the learned insights in the school, in and out of the classroom.

II. OBJECTIVES
1. Define gender-based violence.
2. Identify different types and sites of gender-based violence, its main victims and perpetrators.
3. Analyze gender-based violence from the women’s human rights perspective.;
