5 CONIC SECTION, MAT 2280

Circle
(𝑥 − ℎ) + (𝑦 − 𝑘)2 = 𝑟 2
2

X and Y terms are both squared

The coefficients of squared terms have same sign and value
Example 1. 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 − 8𝑥 + 10𝑦 = −32
Parabolas

Only one term is squared.

If x-term is squared it opens in the y-direction.

P is positive it opens in the positive direction.
P is negative it opens in the negative direction.

If y- term is squared it opens in the x-direction.

P is positive it opens in the positive direction.
P is negative it opens in the negative direction.

Vertex at the point (ℎ, 𝑘)

Distance from the vertex to the focus is p units.

Distance from the vertex to the directrix is p units.

Example 2. 𝑥 2 − 6𝑥 − 8𝑦 − 7 = 0
Ellipse
x and y terms are both squares.

coefficients of squared terms have same sign but different values.

Center at (ℎ, 𝑘)

Distance from center to vertex point in the x-direction equals a.

Distance from the center to vertex point in y-direction equals b.

Distance from the center to focus points equals c. where 𝑐 2 = 𝑎2 − 𝑏 2 or 𝑐 2 = 𝑏 2 − 𝑎2

Example 3. 9𝑥 2 + 16𝑦 2 − 54𝑥 + 64𝑦 = −1

Hyperbola
x and y terms are squared.

The coefficients have different signs.

If 𝑥 2 term is positive, then it opens in the x-direction.

If 𝑦 2 term is positive, then it opens in the y-direction.

Center at (ℎ, 𝑘)

The distance from center to vertex points is qualed to a.

The distance from center to focus points is equaled to c, where 𝑐 2 = 𝑎2 + 𝑏 2

Example 4. 9𝑥 2 − 16𝑦 2 − 36𝑥 + 96𝑦 = 252

Example 5. Identify the following as either a Circle, Ellipse, Parabola, or Hyperbola.

1. 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 − 10𝑥 − 4𝑦 = −4

2. 9𝑥 2 + 4𝑦 2 − 18𝑥 + 24𝑦 = −9

3. 25𝑥 2 − 4𝑦 2 + 50𝑥 + 8𝑦 = 79

4. 4𝑦 2 − 4𝑦 − 48𝑥 − 47 = 0

5. 3𝑥 2 + 2𝑦 2 + 24𝑥 + 4𝑦 = −44

6. 𝑥 2 + 6𝑥 − 16𝑦 − 23 = 0

7. 12𝑦 2 − 16𝑥 2 − 12𝑦 − 32𝑥 = 61

8. 4𝑥 2 + 4𝑦 2 − 4𝑥 + 4𝑦 = 14
