USING GRAMMALY APPLICATION TO IMPROVE WRITING SKILL

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

A. Backround

In the learning process, students must have writing competence. Writing competence
can make students express their ideas creatively. Meanwhile, writing is a difficult skill to be
mastered by student, especially writing in english. It is said the student can speak english
fluently but they have difficulty in writing with the correct use of linguistic rule such as
composing by vocabulary in writing.
Base on Richard and Renandya (2002: 303) state in Ratnaningsih (Gardner, 2016),
that writing is the most difficult skill for second or foreign language learner to master. Some
students can speak English fluency and confidently, although they have diffulties in
conveying their writing skills.
In school, teachers rarely pay attention to students’ writing whether the writing
method is correct or not, the vocabulary is correct or not, the use of punctuation is correct or
not, the spelling is correct or not and there is no test to test the writing ability of students or
high school students, that is why students’ writing skills not good.
Nunan (1989:36) as cited in Risky (Tambusai, 2018) also states that component of
writing include control of content, format, spelling, grammar, vocabulary and punctuation.
Writing needed ability to choose good word with right grammar. Through four that
component is one of the ways to improve students’ writing skills. In statements above the
writing is ability to producing component of writing to deliver massage from the writer to
the reader. Based on that Statement, written text provide clear and almost complete
explanation which include of the component of writing, because to express to written text
requires careful thought and the put into a word, sentences, paragraphs, and then form a
written text.
The researcher chooses the Grammaly application as a technique in teaching writing
because the use of this application is in accordance with what is needed by both teachers and
students. By using this application, students can learn and know how to use vocabulary
properly in writing. That is why the writer chose “Using Grammaly Application to Improve
Writing Skill” as title of this research.
B. Problem Statement
Based on the background above, the problem of the study was

“Does the use of the Grammaly application improve students’ writing skills?”

C. Objective of the Research


Based on the problem statement, the objectives of the research was

“To find out the use of Grammaly application can improve students writing skills”

D. Significant of the Research


The researcher really expects that this study will be useful and can give contribution to
some parties, as follow:

1. For the English teacher, they can use this application to improve students’ writing skills
in the teaching and learning process.
2. For students, the use of learning models by using applications in writing will certainly
attract attention in learning. Students become motivated to learn to write using this
application because it is considered not monotonous or boring so that students can easily
express creative ideas in writing.

E. Scope of the Research


This research only covers a limited number of students for the subject of study. For
this research, the focus is on how to improve the student writing skill using Grammaly
application. The population of this research is the seventh grade students of SMP in Tinombo
Selatan. As elementary school graduates, the researcher considers that their writing skills are not
good enough. It depends on their English teacher in their elementary school. However, most of
the students showed the same symptoms when they were assigned to write the text; they get
confused and quit easily. The researcher took only 40 students who were taken randomly from
all seventh grades in the targeted junior high school.

F. Definition of Key terms


To make easier in understanding this research, the researcher defines the key terms as
follows:

1. Writing
Writing Essentialy is seen as a product constructed from the writer‟s command
of grammatical and lexical knowledge, and writing development is considered to be the
result of imitating and manipulating models provided by the teacher (Key Hyland,
2003:03).
2. Motivated
having an incentive or a strong desire to do well or succeed in some pursuit a
motivated employee Courses are being offered on college campuses for those who are
highly motivated but who without such help often drop out and are lost to society and
themselves
