RON: A pleasant day to everyone, we are going to present to you the contributions of Balik
Scientist in nation building.
RON: Hernando Salapare the third is a 2016 Balik Scientist Awardee of the Department of
Science and Technology (DOST)—Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging
Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD). Salapare obtained his Bachelor of
Science in Applied Physics and Master of Science in Physics degrees from the University of the
Philippines, Diliman in 2007 and 2010, respectively.
JAKE: In order to support and develop individual academic and organizational research
programs, the Science Research Center (SRC) acts as the College of Science's research
division. The Center is the College's response to its goal of advancing science research
throughout the nation, not just at UPB but also in Northern Luzon and other regions. The SRC is
intended to eventually become a center of excellence for both fundamental research and
innovation initiatives that will help the creation of technology and goods that will be
advantageous to both Filipinos and the rest of the globe.
GENESIS: The inaugural ceremony of the SRC building took place in 2016. On July 6, 2020, at
the 73rd University Council meeting, SRC was formally established as the CS research arm and
added to UPB's organizational structure. Currently, the SRC building houses UPB's science
labs, which serve the institution's well-established research programs and projects in the fields
of nanotechnology, plasma physics, energy physics, modeling and simulation, natural products,
microbiology, and ecology. The academic programs offered by the college, namely the Master
of Science in Conservation and Restoration Ecology, the Master of Science in Mathematics, and
the Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics programs, all benefit from the research outputs
produced by these laboratories that are responsive to the needs of the different sectors of the
community and the larger society. and Biology, in addition to the undergraduate degrees in
Physics, Math, Computer Science, and Biology. Additionally, the SRC serves as a hub for
research in other disciplinary clusters, such as human kinetics, chemistry, and geology.
JAKE: The SRC is also required to provide testing and analytical services for the use of specific
and readily accessible laboratory equipment, as well as pertinent training in research and
initiatives related to research, in keeping with the University's commitment to public service. In
order to do this, processes for utilizing the facility as well as policies and guidelines about its use
are being finalized. A website will also be developed in order to make it simpler for people to
access information about the college's past and present research endeavors as well as
instructions on how to request SRC services and training.
