Assignment 1
Semester 1, 2023
Important
This is an individual assessment. Include a declaration at the start of your
assessment that states that it is your own work. The assessments of students
without a declaration will not be marked. Students who are found to have
plagiarised work will be referred to the disciplinary committee.

Question 1
1.1 Copy the table below to your assessment answer script and complete it. List the
3 types of magma, briefly describe how each type is formed and provide the
composition number of each type of magma with the aid of Figure 1. (9)
1.2 Triaxial testing was conducted in the laboratory on isotropic rock cores. Core
sizes of 50 mm were used (corrections are not required). The laboratory data is as
follows:

(a) Obtain the UCS of the rock and explain your answer. (3)

(b) Calculate the shear strength of the rock in terms of the Mohr-Coulomb failure
criterion. Use σn = 150 MPa (10)
1.3 Differentiate between pressure and stress and provide an example of each. (4)
Question 1 = 26 Marks
Question 2
2.1 List the 7 major mineral groups and assign each of the following minerals to the
groups you listed: quartz, hematite, gypsum, barite, diamond, gold, calcite. (14)
2.2 Differentiate between the Mohr-Coulomb strength criterion and the Hoek-Brown
failure criterion and explain the deciding factors in deciding which criterion to use. (5)

Question 2 = 19 Marks
Question 3
3.1 (a) Identify the geology at the following coordinates:
25° 32’ 34’’ S 28° 01’ 58’’ E (WGS84) (5)
,,,, ,,(b) List the Eon and Era of formation of the local geology. (4)
……(c) Should rock be quarried from this formation, would you say that the rock
……….would be useable for road construction? (4)
(d) List the Moh’s hardness of at least two of the minerals contained within this
……….rock type (2)
