DIRECT VARIATION

1
Direct Variation
Observe the two quantities (distance and time of flight).

What happens to the time of flight as the distance to be covered increases?

As the distance to be covered increases, the time of the flight increases.

This shows direct variation.

As one quantity increases at a constant rate, the other
quantity increases at a constant rate as well.
As one quantity decreases at a constant rate, the other
quantity decreases at a constant rate as well.

Direct Variation 2
Direct Variation
To consider as a direct variation, there must be a constant rate in the
increase or decrease of the quantities.

Get the quotient of pair of

corresponding quantities
Same ratio means there is a constant rate.

There is another method to check if there is a common ratio.

6400 6400

Get the cross-product

Same product means there is a constant rate.

Direct Variation 4
Direct Variation
Determine if the table shows direct variation or not. Explain.

1. direct variation

both quantity increases

same ratio

2. not a direct
variation

3. not a direct
variation

both quantity increases

same ratio

Direct Variation 6
Equation of a Direct Variation
y varies directly as x
y = kx
where k is the constant of variation and k ≠ 0
Translate the statement to equation. Let k be the constant of variation.
1. The quantity M varies directly as the quantity w.

2. The total cost (C) of pineapples varies directly as the price (p) per
kilo.

3. The area of a circle (A) varies directly as the square of the radius
(r).

Direct Variation 7
Variation Constant or Proportionality Constant
- is the constant rate of change in direct variation
In “y varies directly as x”, y = kx

where k is the constant of variation and k ≠ 0

Find the constant of variation and the equation of variation,
given that y varies directly as x.

Problem on Direct Variation
Most pets age at a different rate than their human companions. For
example, a 3-year-old dog is often considered to be 21 in human years.
What is the human age of a dog that is 7 years old?

Representation Let x be the dog’s actual age = 3

of the given y be the human-equivalent age = 21
Human-equivalent age of the dog
varies directly as dog’s actual age

example, a 3-year-old dog is often considered to be 21 in human years.
What is the human age of a dog that is 7 years old?

Substitute x = 7 to the
equation of the variation

The human age of a 7 years old dog is 49 years old.
