INTRODUCTION

Students who are late to class may exhibit

tardiness. One of the biggest issues at schools is engaged
late for class. Similar to when a students arrives late to
class and the lecturer is engaged in a conversation or
sharing information with the class, the other students
who arrive on time will soon become distracted or
disrupted by the latecomer. The lecturer and the
students risk losing focus and forgetting the crucial things
they were going to cover. To reduce the number of
persistently tardy students and to ensure students
punctuality, school must implement an affective tardy
policy. Students who are on time typically receive better
grades than delayed students. This chapter will outline
the background of the problem, statement of the
problem, the significance of the study, objectives, scope
and delimitation of the study, definition of operational
terms, and end notes for chapter one. Making the
students punctual, disciplined, and regular is useful to
prepare them for the workplace environment in the
future. The purpose of this study is to

identify the risk factors that lad to student tardiness and

how that affects learning.

 Background of the study

Lateness is always a serious problem, especially for
students. The focus of this tardiness research is to fine
out what causes students to be late, which affects their
focus on academic performance, and to

know how to avoid such problems. Ones of the most

important things a student can do for academic
success is also the most basic. Get to school on time
every day.
Entertardiness refers to the frequent tardiness of
students, which can have a huge impact on a student’s
future education and career. Tardiness can be defined
as a situation where an individual arrives after the
appropriate scheduled or usual time. It is a synonym
for “lateness” and is defined as slowness af action or
reaction (Merriam Webster Dictionary).

Arriving late can be defined as “the condition of a

person arriving at a convenient, scheduled or regular
time”.

Some say tardiness is a widespread problem with

serious consequences, especially for young students of
Dakung Patag Natinal High School whose parents need
to get to school on time. Students who are often late
may miss important topics\lessons or anyacdemic
activities.Teachers can be frustrated when tardy
students disrupt class and often have to relearn
material they missed. Arriving late to school can cause
students to stop socializing withtheir peers, which can
affect social interactions and make them feel isolated
from their peers. The researchers have found that

students who are often late to class miss out on

important presentations and learning activities.

Students who are repeatedly late may need more

support. Teachers should remember that respecting all
student’s time is a life skill that can be learned in any
subject. Schools have rules about being late or absent.
Students are people, and teenagers can be just as
challenging for parents as they are for teachers. Many
students can be rude, absent or late. But there are also
students who want to listen, pay attention and always
get involved. These students really want to learn, and
teachers have a duty to keep the most difficult
students. Find out what makes students truant and try
different ways to deal with truant students. If the
teacher thinks he/she can handle it,
focus on hhi/her behavior without embarrassing or
humiliating them. Dealing with students who are
always late is frustrating for many teachers. A student
who

arrives late interrupts the teacher’s lessom anf makes

the lesson late. Teachers should not take tardiness
lightly and should discipline students who are
consistentle late. Although tardiness is a serious
problem, it does not have immediate consequences,
leading to a decline in the student’s academic
performance. This study seeks to find answers to
various causes of delayd and methods of delay
prevention.

 Statement of the problem

The purpose of this phenomenologyis to know the
causes of tardiness among the students of Dakung
Patag NHS.
At the end of the study, the researchers will answering
the following questions below
1. What is tardiness?
2. What are the causes of tardiness?

3. What are the advantage anf disadvantage of

tardiness?

 Significance of the study

The result of this study is helpful to the following:

a. Students : Students can use the result of this study

to know how to overcome tadiness in school. The
result of the study will help them to improve their
academic performance, this study also can help them
to create plan to how handle their to come early in
school
b. Teachers : Teachers can use the result of this study
to help their students how to reduce tardiness. They
can use the result to know why some students came
late in scholl, it helps to encourage their students to
came early in scholl.

c. Administrator : Administrator can use study to guide

and to reduce tardiness in their school. This study
can use conduct seminar or meeting for all teacher
and the students through this plan the results of
tardiness can improve.

d. Future Researcher : Future researcher can use the

result of this study to their guide and reference for
their own similar study.

 Assumptions of the study

Students in high school have experienced several
difficulties as a result of being late. The learner’s
academic performance is one of them and was a
source of worry. The findings of this study indicated
that parents have a significant role in raising their
children because of the potential good negative effects
that training a child may have. It was clear that
students who didn’t get enough sleep ay night had
trouble focusing throughout the day, which resulted in
their arriving late

to class. As a result, parents needed to keep an eye on

their kid’s bedtimes and wakeup hours.

 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This studt is limited only in students of DAKUNG
PATAG NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL of Upper Patag
Sison,Surigao del Norte

 Definition of terms
The following definitions are provided to ensure
uniformity and understanding of these terms
throughout the study. The researchers develops all
definition not accompanied by a citation

Tardiness - Tardiness is being late for any in our society.

Punctuality - Punctuality is the attribute of being
on time.
Attentiveness – Attentiveness is being alertor
observant.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

Being always present in class and getting

to school on time are two of the crucial determining
factors of a student’s success, not just as a student
but as a person who will be managing his or her own
life in the future. Given the importance of being
punctual, this study aims to explore and find out the
factors that affect the punctuality of Dakung Patag
National High School students. In this chapter, we
will be discussing the background of our study. It
includes facts about tardiness, the different factors
that cause it, and its effect on the students as
students and as bearers of their own lives in the
future. From reliable research materials like online
journals and research papers, we will provide some
facts and theories from authors, teachers, and
notable people in order to have a concrete
justification for our study.

In the beginning, we will define tardiness

and then go through certain theories and information
related to it. The numerous circumstances,
psychological theories, instructor observations, and
individual student explanations that contribute to
pupils arriving to school late will next be

covered. The consequences of tardiness on

students will next be examined, including how it may
affect not only their futures but also that of other
people and themselves.

Tardiness
As students at Dakung Patag National High
School, we are expected to perform well and to
achieve excellence in everything that we do, most
especially in the academic aspect. Punctuality, or
arriving on time or being late, is one factor that
influences the quality of a student's performance.
Lateness is synonymous with "tardiness," which
implies being slow to act or slow to respond, thus
not

meeting up with proper or usual timing. Lastly, we

defined tardiness as "being late for any measurable
length of time past the stated or scheduled start time
for work or school." In most schools, a student is
considered tardy when he or she is not present
when the school bell rings or when the first teacher
starts to give instructional materials for the first
subject in the morning class.

One of the most recurring and frustrating problems

that schools are having with their students
nowadays is
tardiness. It causes issues, particularly for students,
because it can cause and lead to failures in
homework, written exams, and projects. It may
become a habit for some students, which may lead
to more serious problems like a poor learning
process.

The student’s most important learning period

of the day is in the morning, specifically from 8:00 to
9:30 AM. It's because during this time of day,
students are most alert and perceptive. Additionally,
it explains why the most crucial courses and topics
are covered at this time. Therefore, students who
arrive late or fail to show up during this period of the
day miss the majority of the crucial teachings that
need to be remembered and learned.

Factors affecting Punctuality

The causes of tardiness to class and other
elements influencing a student's punctuality can
differ. Some views argue that a person's personality
is to blame for their tardiness. While some theorists
believed that tardiness was a "inborn quality"
because being early or late

is "partially biologically determined," as she also

agreed with, Clarise Piator noted that other experts
also thought that some people are "chronically tardy"
because they consciously and unconsciously benefit
from it.

The most common are going to bed late

and waking up late the next morning. The authors
added "film-watching late at night" as a cause for
tardiness. The student may forget that he or she
needs to be in school the next day. The distance
between the student’s home and school, or solely
the school’s location, is also considered by
researchers as a possible cause for tardiness. Not
only does it take longer to get to school, but the
student is more vulnerable to distractions and
hindrances along the way, according to the authors.
Parents' untimely tasks and commands are also
reasons that students come late to school. Habitual
tardiness can also be learned from other members
of the family, especially from the older ones. Lack of
a firm and consistent policy on punctuality also
encourages students to come late at school since
there are no consequences attached to

lateness or tardiness. These causes of tardiness will

lead to serious effects.

Another study was the one conducted by

Aple May Ybanez. The objective of the study was to
determine the causes of the absenteeism and
lateness among the secondary students of Dakung
Patag National High School and to seek for solutions
to the growing problem.
The study revealed that the causes of
tardiness among the secondary students Dakung
Patag National High School were “going late to bed
because of watching films and playing mobile
games, resulting into wake up late in the morning,
distance to school and keeping friends who are not
students”. These results went consistent with the
results of the researcher’s reference studies which
proves that tardiness among students have been a
growing problem and that it is caused, not just
because of the students but also because of the lack
of imposing discipline from the parents.

The fact that students sometimes arrive late

for class isn't always their fault. The way teachers
deal with tardy pupils may also have an impact on a
student's punctuality. The pupils could become
perplexed as a result of this difference regarding the
significance of arriving on

time for class. The absence of motivation is a further

explanation. There are no incentives or awards for
students who arrive on time. Additionally, tardiness
is tolerated; nothing is done until the tenth or
subsequent strike. Another factor

is "providing the student the sense that they won't be

missing anything if they are late," as in some
classrooms, there are no critical tasks, directions, or
lessons

Effects of Tardiness
Tardiness among students has its own
negative repercussions. The researchers
emphasized that lateness or tardiness is not just the
problem of the late student but it affects the
surrounding people. A student coming late in class
distracts the rest of the students and disrupts the
flow of the teacher’s discussion. It is even a burden
to the student/s whom the late students ask for what
to catch up with. The rest of the effects given by the
researchers are about the welfare of the whole
school, its productivity and
revenue. Knowing the possible effects of lateness or
tardiness, it is necessary for solutions to be
executed.

Studies have revealed that those students

with “perfect or near-perfect attendance” have good
grades compared to those students who misses
classes often and late-comers. Moreover, the results
from the survey report conducted by teachers show
that students with high tardiness rates have “higher
rates of suspension and other disciplinary
measures”. It also causes the students to have
behavioral problems and to drop out. Lastly,
Students who

are frequently tardy to school are also more apt to

be fired from a job for showing up late”.
The study was very comprehensive in its
subject matter. It addresses not only school
tardiness, but also the consequences of work
tardiness. It shows that "students who are on time
for school classes are also likely to be on time at
work, while students who are tardy frequently at

school will probably also be tardy at work." The

study requires a lot of data, but the researchers
were able to gather a sufficient amount. Though
some possible correlations were not established, it is
outside the scope of this research.
Due to the fact that tardiness has been
giving negative effects on the students especially in
Dakung Patag National High School nowadays, the
most important thing to do is to develop a firm,
consistent and functional policy that addresses late
students. They should as well teach it and integrate
it in every lesson. The effort on the remedy on
lateness or tardiness does not start and end with the
school. It must begin with the parents of the students
and the government must take part as well.
Transportation must be improved in order to avoid
students getting stuck in traffic or encountering other
obstacles down the streets.
To summarize, many studies have shown the
reasons and factors that may contribute to the
tardiness of a student. One of the

mentioned reasons of tardy students was waking up

late in the morning, which can also be attributed to
late-night activities, such as social networking,
watching movies and television shows, as well as
untimely academic and domestic errands. As proven
by several studies, sometimes, it’s not also the act of
the student that leads to his/her tardiness. The
heavy traffic, the teachers, the school surroundings
and policies may also serve as influences to the
tardiness of students.

Many studies have also shown the effects of

tardiness on the students, the teachers, the school
and the society. According to these studies, the
tardiness of a student consumes his/her learning
time as well as disturbs other students and teachers.
The tardy student also poses as a threat to the
school as an educational and professional institution
and the student may be one of the less productive
members of the society.

Many studies and testimonies pointed to

effective remedies for tardiness. These studies
promoted the integration of personality development
and interdisciplinary programs into the school
curriculum to aid students inenhancing positive
behavior and personality, which led to a decrease in
tardiness.
