As the world faces extraordinary challenges – from climate change to food insecurity – delivering on our
purpose is more critical than ever before. Our commitment to protect the planet is multifold, addressing
priorities such as climate change, water, land use, farmer livelihoods, and more. Cargill supports
the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Working to nourish the world, protect the
planet and empower communities, we know business plays an important role in advancing the Global
Goals.
As we drive progress against our sustainability priorities, we’ll do so by engaging, empowering and
advancing sustainable practices across farm and field, because we believe agriculture is how we’ll
deliver. Agriculture is also how we will address climate change, protect our land and water and
sustainably feed a growing population. Due to our unique position in the agro-food value chain and
close connections with farmers and food and beverage manufacturers, retailers and food service
companies, our Code of Conduct commitments are centered on our existing goals to reduce greenhouse
gas emissions in our supply chains and advance water stewardship.
For climate, we are committed to reducing our Scope 3 emissions by 30% per ton of product by 2030.
Our climate target has been approved by the Science Based Target Initiative.
For water, our goal is to achieve sustainable water management in 100% of priority watersheds by 2030,
measured against a 2020 baseline, through:
1. Restoring 600 billion liters of water in priority watersheds.
2. Reducing 5 million kg of water pollutants in priority watersheds.
3. Implementing our Water Stewardship program at all priority facilities.
4. Improving access to safe drinking water in 25 priority watersheds.
Our water targets are science-based, and our actions will reflect the severity of the water challenges
faced by that community and watershed, and our contribution to those challenges. Our water target
setting approach was developed in close partnership with the World Resources Institute. To learn more
about the process we took with the World Resources Institute to set our targets, click here. Cargill
priority facilities were selected based on water stress and water usage. Together they account for more
than 80% of our total operational water use.
To track progress on our commitments and targets, please review our ESG Scorecard and our CDP
Climate and Water responses in our Reporting Hub.
Climate Action
In support of our climate commitment, Cargill is making progress toward reducing our – and our
customers’ – emissions across the supply chain and building climate resilience in agriculture. Together
with farmers, we’re working diligently to deliver our science-based climate commitments while
developing new markets for carbon, revitalizing landscapes through regenerative agriculture and grazing
practices, promoting farmer livelihoods, and protecting forests and their surrounding ecosystems.
We are committed to supporting adoption of soil health best practices. Enhancing soil health has many
interrelated benefits, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving water quality, increasing
drought resilience, enhancing farmer prosperity and helping to feed a growing global population. Soil is
critical in helping slow climate change. As the largest carbon sink on land, soil stores over three times
more carbon than forests and other vegetation.
We believe regenerative agriculture practices will benefit the long-term profitability and resiliency of
farmers while simultaneously advancing our progress against our science-based climate commitment to
reduce GHG emissions in our global supply chain. Cargill is also developing solutions that reduce the
greenhouse gas impacts of animal production, and other innovations across our business to advance
sustainability.
Water Action
As stated above, Cargill’s global water commitment is to achieve sustainable water management in all
priority watersheds in operations and supply chains by 2030 by applying a context-based approach. We
define sustainable water management as effectively balancing and addressing the shared water
challenges of availability, quality and access to safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH),
using an approach that is informed by local context.
We believe Cargill has an important leadership role to play in advancing water stewardship, working
with partners across our value chain, to accelerate sustainable water solutions that protect water
quality and quantity to promote access to clean water. We partner with farmers, customers and NGOs
to encourage farming practices that improve water quality and availability, while supporting farmer
livelihoods and community resilience.
We are committed to taking action to improve community access to water in alignment with the U.N.
Sustainable Development Goal 6. Cargill is a proud signatory of the CEO Water Mandate and a member
of the Water Resilience Coalition. Both are UN Global Compact initiatives that mobilize business leaders
on water, sanitation, and the Sustainable Development Goals. Our strategy aligns with the six core focus
areas outlined by the Mandate. We will focus our water efforts on improving water availability, quality
and access in the supply chains and regions where we are well-positioned to drive positive change.
