The Great Gatsby Literary Essay Outline!

Course Code: ENG2DB Due Date: Thursday, December 1st

Instructions

Your task is to write an 800-1000 word, four paragraph literary essay based on The Great Gatsby by F.
Scott Fitzgerald. You will select one of the topics provided (or generate one of your own, with teacher
approval), craft a thesis statement, and generate two strong supporting arguments (one paragraph
per argument) to show different yet complementary ways in which the thesis is true. Each supporting
argument will require two quotations to prove the validity of your arguments.

This essay will help to prepare you for grade eleven. Also necessary in grade eleven and throughout
the rest of this course, you need to follow MLA formatting requirements and also create a proper page
of Work(s) Cited.

Essay Topics:

1. Some writers select a narrative voice that sharpens or clarifies their stories; others choose a
narrative voice that mystifies or misleads. How and to what effect has F. Scott Fitzgerald
employed narrative voice in The Great Gatsby?

2. Examine one central theme in The Great Gatsby and discuss how F. Scott Fitzgerald uses
literary elements to convey a specific perspective on that theme.

3. Why is setting important in The Great Gatsby? (Your thesis should argue one major reason why
the setting matters in the story, and then supporting arguments will offer two ways in which
or reasons why the thesis is true).

4. Discuss the significance of social status in The Great Gatsby and comment on its contribution
to characterization.

5. Choose your own. Must be teacher approved!!!

Format Expectations:
Introduction:

Body Paragraph 1:

Conclusion:
- restate your thesis in different words, review your arguments, provide final thoughts and

Preparation Steps:
1. Brainstorming. You have a clear and coherent essay, you need to ensure the entire essay is
arguing your thesis. First part of brainstorming of how to create a theme. You need to identify
a major topic in your novel and establish what you are learning from it. The first step of the
preparation is filling out the topic vs. theme planner.

2. Time to decide what topic you want to be focussing on for your essay. It is time to develop a
thesis from the topics listed above. Once you have developed your thesis, you need to
identify 2 strong supporting arguments that can be supported with 2 proofs each. Use this
arguments and proof planner to help you organize your thoughts.

3. Now that you have established your thesis, points and proofs, it is time to start working on
developing your essay. Start working on the brainstorming planner. Use this graphic essay
organizer to help organize your thoughts and navigate your way through the essay.

4. Once you have completed your graphic essay organizer, it is time to start drafting your rough
copy. You should be able to copy and paste your rough draft onto a document and have it be
your rough copy. It is now time for you to start editing your rough draft. Use this peer-edit
checklist to ensure your essay is following proper formatting guidelines.

5. Once you have completed the peer edit checklist. Ensure you are adding and making the
necessary corrections to better your essay. Once completed, read over your essay and ensure
all mistakes/errors/issues are caught and corrected. Then copy and paste the good copy onto
a new document and submit the finalized draft. Once submitted, you're done!
