FOREWORD

INTRODUCTION
Cassava feeds about 270 million people in Eastern and Southern sub-region. However, for
the last two decades cassava productivity has been threatened by pandemics of two major
cassava virus; first, cassava mosaic virus that almost eradicated cassava during 1990s and
early 2000, and second, cassava brown streak virus that has been more devastating recently
in 2000s.The latter, was initially localized in the hot humid coastal regions, but has of recent
been reported to be spreading inland to higher altitudes of the region.
To avert the above virus devastating, IITA and NARS partners have focused on developing
resistant varieties and formal cassava seed systems. Under 5CP project, partner countries
agreed to share elite varieties for regional testing to further understand the genotype by
environment by virus interaction and to identify superior genotypes.
The catalogue presents the current top most elite cassava cultivars that have been developed
in the region with single or dual resistance to CMD and CBSD. The varieties are currently being
promoted in 5 countries, Malawi, Mozambique, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, and possibly
beyond, for control of the two viruses.
The catalogue is arranged in two inter-facing information and pictorial pages for each of the
varieties. The information page covers the morphological characteristics, root attributes,
agronomic performance attributes as well as the consumer and processing qualities of a
variety. The pictorial page presents seven different photos showing apical shoot, leaf with its
petiole, stems, full plant, three complete roots, root cross section, and root attachment. The
study of these pictures allows the reader to clearly learn the distinguishing features of each
variety.
v
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The cassava variety catalogue has been produced courtesy of 5CP (New Cassava Varieties and
seed system to combat CBSD and CMD) project, led by IITA, and funded by Bill and Melinda
Gates Foundation. The NARS partners in the five (5) countries (Malawi, Mozambique,
Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda) agreed to list up their elite varieties and provided passport
and agronomic data for the catalogue. We deeply appreciate the efforts of the IITA regional
communication office for the graphical design of the catalogue that make it visually appealing
to the user.
