This technical document covers the structural analysis and design of additional steel frame
for retrofitting of 2 storey residential building.

DESIGN CRITERIA
1.2. Material Specifications
1.2.1. Concrete
Minimum compressive strength in 28days, f’c = 24.13MPa (3500psi)

1.2.2. Steel Reinforcement

For diameter 12 and above: Minimum yield strength, fy = 414MPa (Grade 60)

1.2.3. Structural Steel

Specs and type Properties ASTM A36
fy = 250 MPa (Yield Strength)
Fu = 400 MPa (Ultimate Stress)
Es = 200,000 MPa (Modulus of Elasticity)

1.2.4. Welding
Specs and Type E70XX Electrodes

1.2.5. High Strength Bolts, Nuts and washers

Specs and Type ASTM A325

1.3. Material Weight and Densities

Unit weight of major construction materials are as follows;
Reinforced Concrete 23.56 kN/m3
Structural Steel and Reinforcement 77 kN/m3

1.4. Minimum Concrete Cover

1.5. Minimum Amount of Reinforcement

See NSCP for minimum concrete reinforcement.
1.6. Design Loadings

CALCULATION REPORT

1.6.1. Dead Load, (D)

Dead Load
1) Selfweight
Concrete unit weight = 24 kN/m3

2) Member Load
150mm CHB 3.11 kN/m per meter height
100mm CHB 2.98 kN/m per meter height

Floor load Floors (KN/sq.m) Roof (KN/sq.m)

115mm slab 24 x thickness of slab
roof framing see truss weight
corrugated roofing sheet 0.1
floor finish 1.10
ceiling 0.10 0.1
MEP 0.10 0.1
Interior Partition 1.00
Additional Loads from existing concrete structure (Weight Extracted from separate model)
1.6.2. Live Load, (L)

Live load
Basic Floor Area 1.9 kN/m2
Exterior Balcony 2.9 kN/m2
Deck 1.9 kN/m2
Roof 0.60 kN/m2

1.6.3. Wind Load, (W)

Wind Speed 270 kph
Building Classification Category IV
Exposure Category C
Basic formula qz = 0.613KzKztKdV2 (N/m2); V in m/s
Where:
qz = velocity pressure evaluated at height z above ground (kN/m2)
Kz = velocity pressure exposure coefficient at height z (Exposure C applies)
Kzt = topographic factor defined in Section 207.5.7.2 of NSCP 2015
Kd = wind directionality factor given in Table 207-2 of NSCP 2015
V = basic wind velocity (speed), 270 kph

1.6.4. Earthquake Load, (E)

The earthquake loads are determined based on the latest local governing code for seismic design
NSCP 2015, which refers to Uniform Building Code (UBC 97) and International Building Code
(IBC-2009). According to the Phivolcs (http://faultfinder.phivolcs.dost.gov.ph/), the nearest active
fault approximately within the area is 4.3 km which is the West Valley Fault. Refer to following
map.

2. DESIGN APPROACH AND METHODOLOGY
2.1. Codes, Standards and References

• National Structural Code of the Philippines 2015

• Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures (ASCE/SEI 7-16)
• Building Code Requirement for Structural Concrete and Commentary (ACI 318M-11)
• Code Requirement for Environmental Engineering Concrete Structures and Commentary (ACI 350M-
06)
2.2. Analysis and/or Model Brief Description
The structural system of building structure is designed as a Special Seismic Moment Frame. The lateral
resisting member is composed of girders and columns. The structural analysis and stresses computation are
determined using the support of reputable structural software STAAD Pro.

Dead loads, live loads and lateral loads used are based on the latest code of NSCP.
