GUIDELINES AND MECHANICS IN THE CHORAL READING CONTEST

(GRADE 8)

1. All bona fide Grade 8 students are allowed to join the Choral Reading contest.
2. Teachers of Grade 8 shall choose at least two groups from all her/his classes to enter the contest.
3. Grade 8 teachers shall have their own elimination round to determine which two groups they
are going to enter in the final round on Nov. 28, 2023.
4. The final competition will be on November 28, 2023 at 10:00 am at a future venue to be
determined.
5. Each group shall be composed of 10-15 students. They will be in uniform while performing the
contest piece.
6. Each group will perform either “The Ballad of a Mother’s Heart” by Jose La Villa Tierra or “The
Bashful Earthquake” by Anonymous.
7. The performance should not exceed more than 5 minutes and only the reading materials shall be
used as props.
8. The criteria for judging the winner will be:
25 pts. - Volume: Matching one’s personal loudness appropriately to the group’s overall
performance.
25 pts. - Clarity: Producing clear, easily understandable speech with syllables clearly
enunciated.
25 pts. - Timing or Flow: Matching one’s personal timing and rhythm to the group’s
performance.
25 pts. - Expression: Expressing the poem’s dynamic content by modulating the voice
appropriately.
9. The decision of the judges is final.
