Document: Sandamalee’s Day

Instructions: Read the following text and answer the questions below.

Word count: 411 words

Instructions: Read the following text and answer the questions below. You have 60
minutes to complete this task. Dictionaries and translating devices are not
permitted.

My name is Sandamalee. I am 12 years old and I come from Sri Lanka which is
an island country in South Asia, located in the Indian Ocean. I work as a machine
operator in a factory. I make Adidas T-shirts and trousers.
I live in a house with other workers. I wake up around 6 a. m. and get ready for
work. I have breakfast at work, which is provided by the factory. I work from 7 a. m.
to 6 p. m. five days a week. I am allowed a 10-minute tea break in the morning and
afternoon, and half an hour for lunch.
I spend a lot of time standing up. In the factory there is air-conditioning, but
dust from the fabric circulates and I end up breathing this in. I know this is extremely
dangerous, but I cannot stop working. I need money in order to help my family
members.
When I get home, I wash my clothes, clean my room and cook dinner. I usually
eat rice with vegetables. Once a week I have fish or meat as a treat!
My work officially finishes at 4 p. m. but I usually work overtime until 6 p. m. If I
finish at 4 p. m. each day I earn £57 per month. If I work overtime I can earn about
£74 a month, so I have more money to make ends meet.
I cannot afford to see my family as often as I would like. They live in a rural area
over 300 km from my boarding house. My father is a farmer and I have three sisters
and three brothers. My siblings are younger than me, so I am the oldest child. I
realise that I am supposed to help provide for my family. Every month I send home
£28 to support them.
I have lots of dreams. The most important one is – my own education. My mum’s
friend is a secondary teacher, she is my inspiration. Unfortunately, I am not allowed to
go to school at the moment. This makes me really sad. However, I dream of becoming
a primary school teacher and sharing my love of learning with my pupils. I love
working with young children! It has always been my dream to become a teacher I
believe a good teacher can stimulate and help improve the minds and lives of
countless students by sharing with them the gift of knowledge and believing in them. I
hope this dream will come true one day.

UNIT PLANNER 1: Jobs and creativity.

Lesson 1: Which jobs do you know?

A job, employment , work or occupation, is a person’s role in society. More

specifically, a job is an activity, often performed in exchange of payment for a living.
Many people have multiple jobs.( For example parent, homemaker, and employee).
A person can begin a job by becoming an employee, volunteering, starting a business
etc … There exists many types of jobs that people from different social classes can
perform, depending on their qualifications or skills corresponding to a collar coded –
job. As examples of some different jobs that we know, we can cite lawyers (withe
and gold collar workers, including doctors, businessmen, pilots…), bricklayers (blue
collar workers, mechanic, lorry driver, construction workers etc…), nurses and
kindergarten teachers (pink collar workers) , miners(black collar workers) etc … Or
even old fashion jobs ( vivandières, pinsetters, fillers etc…)

UNIT PLANNER 1: Jobs and creativity.

Lesson 2: How do you recognize that a person is creative in their job?

In his 1996 book Creativity:” The work and lives of Eminent People”, positive
psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi stated that “of all human activities, creativity
comes closest to providing the fulfillment we all hope to get in our lives”. Creativity
is then defined as the tendency to generate or recognise ideas, alternatives, or
possibilities that may be useful in solving problems, communicating with others, and
entertaining ourselves and the others. It is also a way of expressing oneself’s passion
through art, work or any action or task in the society. Thus, people are generally
recognized to be creative in their work because of their ability to generate new
possibilities or new alternatives, their great deal of energy, their way of thinking
outside the box, and also their openness and sensitivity putting in evidence their
amazing skills and reflections.

Lesson 3: Is easy to secure your position in the society through your job?

Having a job in a social environment is a necessity in so far as it enables us to be

responsible and somehow economically stable. Then how can we manage to secure
our position in this same social environment through our work? In reality, it may
seem to be impossible, but the secret to being successful in order to secure a job in
the society is to be the person whose approach and contribution to the staff and
employer exceed their expectations. Indeed, if an individual provides immense value
to an organization, good relationships, remarkable skills and outcomes, supervision
and inspiration for the other persons around them along with the security of being
available, there is little motivation to replace them and they will obviously be
perceived as indispensable in their way of working.

UNIT PLANNER : Communication.

Lesson1: What are the main characteristics of communication?

The English term ‘Communication’ has been evolved from Latin language.
‘Communis and Communicare’ two Latin words related to the word communication.
Communis is a noun word, which means common, communiality or sharing.
Similarly, communicare is a verb, meaning ‘make something common’. It is a process
by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system
of symbols, signs or behavior. Communicating also means to transfer thoughts,
information, emotion, and ideas through gesture, voice, symbols, signs and
expressions from one person to another. Thus, it is a continuous process which
mainly involves three key elements: “the sender, the message and the receiver.” To
be a good communicator, we have got to possess plenty of fundamental
characteristics. Among the ones that we are going to mention and on which we shall
be focused, we can cite: “clearness, conciseness, concreteness, correctness,
consideration, completeness and courtesy.” These are called the seven Cs of
communication.
