Delivery/Instruction:
The teacher presents lesson details.

A polynomial expression P(x) is the expression of the form

wherein the coefficients are real numbers and the exponents or the
degree of the polynomials are non-negative integer
There are also conditions in order for an expression to be a
polynomial.
 No variable has negative or fractional exponent
 No variable is in denominator
 No variable is under the radical symbol

In addition, polynomial is named according to its degree and

number of terms. The different types of polynomials are
monomial, binomials, trinomials and polynomials.
 Monomials are polynomials that consist of one term
Example:6x
 Binomials are polynomials that consist of two terms
Example:3x+2
 Trinomials are polynomials that consist of three terms
Example: 4x2+9x+3
 Polynomials with more than three terms are simply
known as polynomials
Example: x4+2x2+5x+3

The degree of a term in a polynomial in x refers to the exponent

of x. For instance, in the polynomial 3x5-4x2+6. The degree of first
term is 5, the degree of second term is 2 and the degree of third
term is 0. The degree of real number, except 0 is 0. The number 0
has no degree.

The degree of polynomials refers to the highest degree among the

degrees of the terms in the polynomial.

Example 1: Identify which of the following algebraic expressions

are polynomials.
1) 3 x 2+ x −1
2) −10+ x−3 x 3−x 5
3) 3 x 3−x+ 2 x −1
1
4) 2 x 4 + x 2−3 x+ 4 2
5) 51 √ 3 x 7 + x 4−3 x 2 +4

Addition and Subtraction of Polynomials

The description of the polynomial restricts the value of

n(exponent) to whole numbers or nonnegative integers. Hence,
for an algebraic expression to be a polynomial, the exponent of x
should not contain a fraction, a negative integer or an irrational
number
Example:
2
3 x + x +1 2 (polynomial because the exponent does not contain a
fraction, a negative integer or irrational number)

Recall that there are two methods that can be used to add and
subtract polynomials-the Horizontal and Vertical method.

To add two or more polynomials means to combine similar terms.

Similar terms/like terms have exactly the same variable and have
the same exponents.
Example:
2 2
9 x and 5 x
2 y∧−3 y
2
5 x∧5 x (dissimilar)
3 3
2 x an d 2 y (dissimilar)

To combine similar terms means to means to perform addition or

subtraction on the numerical coefficients of the terms by
following rules for adding and subtracting integers.

Example 1:
Add (4 x 2+8 x +2 ¿∧(−3 x 2+ 4 x−7)

Solution: use horizontal and vertical method

Horizontal
(4 x 2+8 x +2 ¿+(−3 x 2 + 4 x−7)
=4 x 2+8 x +2−3 x 2 +4 x−7
=4 x 2−3 x 2 +8 x +4 x +2−7

c. (x +2)(3 x 3−4 x 2−2 x+ 1)
d. (−2 x 3−4 x+1)( x 2−3 x−2)
Solution:

d. Use Lattice method

Give the product of the following polynomials:

1. ( 3 x+ 7 ) ( 3−2 x ) use horizontal approach
2. (3 x−2)(5+6) use FOIL method
3. ( x +3)( x 2−2 x 2 +3) use vertical method
