SOLAR-POWERED URBAN COMMUTER SKATEBOARD
CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION -DESIGN THINKING PROCESS

ABSTRACT

This report describes a sustainable mode of transportation called the Urban commuter
skateboard which is designed to promote carbon-neutral transportation to the people. We
focus to bring an engineless, active mode of transportation include cycling and walking.
Other modes of transportation stuffs like skateboard, push scooters are quite famous
worldwide. Particularly in places with good weather and younger age groups, skateboarding
seems to be a growingly popular ideal vacation activity. When riding a Skateboard people
feel motivated by the view that skateboarding is both relaxing and convenient, we feel more
relaxed and leisure . Skateboarders see their sport as exceptionally useful as it combines the
flexibility of walking with nearly cycling speeds. Our product will be a breakthrough for all
the commuters who loves skating.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

The Urban Commuter Skateboard is a smart, sustainable, and versatile mode of personal
transportation designed for urban commuters of various ages and abilities. It combines the
thrill of skateboarding with the convenience of an eco-friendly electric vehicle. Usually
skateboarding is considered as a recreational activity ,but people can make it as a mode of
transportation. By focusing to promote green energy we built an idea to create urban
commuter skateboard powered by using solar energy .

2.0 PROBLEM BACKROUND:

Jameson is a college student living in cork city, he is a regular commuter , follows a regular
travel pattern, and uses a same mode of transportation every day- a combination of bus and

walking. But he always reaches the college by late hour. Cork City has always huge blocks
and traffic during rush hours.so he always thinks to find a solution for this. There are many
challenges faced by using conventional source of transportation like noise and air pollution .
In the limited space particularly in cities drivers may get stress and confused while
driving ,they can't be get on time in their workplace. Cities are fully congested with cars and
long traffic. For instance, in European countries, two lanes are totally conjusted for parking ,
pedestrian walking area and cycling . About 25% of the global use conventional mode for
transport purposes,by analyzing the possible effects of transport-specific policies on
supporting long-term decarbonization we have to promote green energy for a better
future.According to the irish 30 year climate plan they target to reduce emission by 51% and
reach net zero by 2050. As a result by the introduction of Solar powered Urban commuter
skateboard we provide a sustainable support for daily travelers.

3.0 METHODOLOGY
3.1 Design Thinking Process
Observation
Based on our observation many people face trouble in their traffic system, and they are very
stressed out by these uneven blocks by cars ,buses and so on . For small commuters its Even
college students like ours are stuck in traffic while going to college, People wants a method
of transportation which is very cheap and ecofriendly product, they also wish to live in a

healthier lifestyle and promote the concept of sustainability. By the introduction of the solar
powered urban skateboard people get fresh air and mental health benefits also a new
recreaction activity is introduced.

PROBLEM AREA SOLUTION

 For heavy traffic  We make easier by electrifying

system ,small distance the process, bringing breaks
travellers and stability with more control

Define point of View

We the four group members had undergone analysis, research a discussion in order to make a
good design for all aged people. Initially, we were planned to make a small skateboard but
that design is practically impossilble for aged people. So at the end we fixed our design with
a long skateboard which is powered by using solar energy. We plan to design solar cells on
their decks,so that these energy generated from the sun will charge the skateboard battery,We
know lightweight design is more suitable for the easy movement of transportation so its better
to make by carbon fiber. For the better performance excellent rechargeable batteries are
needed and for better acceleration and speed control we built with good mechanic motors.

Ideate Mode

In this mode we four group members brainstormed idea for how to redesign our skateboard
with all the feature. we discussed with group members and watched some youtube clips for
our reference to workout with ideal design for our project. Everyone shares their idea ,there is
electrical and mechanical idea wants to complete the project.so we splits the task according to
their interests and knowledge .We made a spontaneous survey with my friends and other
people for the best design for their convenience.,by their reviews we fixed out our design

with best features. After our final design we schedule our project into different sections like
material selection ,redesign and final stage and to do accordingly.

Prototype Mode

We made our logical 3D design using Autocad and revit software .After the prototype design
we made all the modifications and basic technical issues, we keep enhancing and find the
problem until a satisfactory version of prototype made.

atmosphere.

TASK ASSIGNMENT

Each member of the group has given a specific task .Nithin has assigned the duty for material
selection and design of electrical phase ,Anto and Sujanapal is assigned for prototype
design .and the report is made by Govind . We have discussed the project by direct meeting
or contacted by outlook mails.

4.1 FEATURES OF PROPOSED SOLUTION

The solar-powered urban commuter skateboard that has been suggested as a solution

combines sustainable transportation and renewable energy. Highlights consist of:

Solar panels: The skateboard has solar panels built into the deck that collect sunlight while
the board is in motion or stationary and use it to recharge the battery.

Regenerative Braking: By converting kinetic energy from braking into electrical energy,
aregenerative braking system increases the range of a skateboard. Electric propulsion
eliminates the need for pushing by using an effective electric motor, making this form of
transportation more environmentally friendly.

Page |7
Long Battery Life: Designed for extended use, the onboard battery has a significant range
per charge, making it appropriate for daily urban commutes.

Smart Connectivity: Riders can plan routes, keep track of energy savings, and monitor
battery status using a mobile app. Firmware updates are also possible with it.

Modular Design: Adaptability for different riding styles and terrains is provided
byinterchangeable parts like trucks, wheels, and decks.

Lightweight Design: When not in use, the skateboard can be easily stored and carried thanks
to its lightweight and portable design.

Sustainable Materials: Its construction promotes environmental responsibility by

utilisingrecyclable and eco-friendly materials.Advanced sensors provide automated braking
and collision detection for increased rider safety. With its tactile interfaces and voice-activated
controls, inclusive design makes a product usable by people of different abilities.

GPS and navigation: The smartphone app offers location tracking, real-time traffic updates,
and GPS-based navigation, making route planning effective.

Cost-Efficiency: Because the skateboard uses regenerative braking and solar power to cut
down on electricity costs, it's an affordable form of urban transportation.

An environmentally friendly and cost-effective way to improve urban commuting while

cutting carbon emissions is the solar-powered urban commuter skateboard. For commuters
who care about the environment, it is a desirable option because it blends cutting-edge
technology with environmentally friendly design

CONCLUSION
Our goal of this project is to find a solution for small-distance travellers with sustainable
feature. This design thinking project provides a chance to develop a project . We improve the
project by mindmaping and divide the various task such as soft skills and hard skills.

In conclusion, the solar-powered urban commuter skateboard presents an innovative and

sustainable solution for modern urban transportation. This offers several advantages, such as
eco-friendliness, reduced energy consumption, and the potential to alleviate traffic congestion
in urban areas. It harnesses the power of the sun to charge its batteries, making it a clean and
renewable mode of transportation. Furthermore, it promotes physical activity, contributing to
a healthier lifestyle for riders, while also reducing the overall carbon footprint of urban
commuting.

However, there are also challenges to consider. The efficiency of solar panels on a small,
portable skateboard may not be sufficient to power the board continuously, especially in
cloudy or nighttime conditions. This limitation may require additional energy storage
solutions, such as rechargeable batteries, to ensure a reliable ride.

To successfully implement solar-powered urban commuter skateboards, it's crucial to address

these challenges through ongoing research and development. Furthermore, infrastructure
improvements may be necessary to accommodate solar charging stations and other support
systems for these skateboards.
