Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear
learners, can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities,
questions, directions, exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to
understand each lesson.

master the basics of Technical Drafting. The language used recognizes the diverse
vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard
sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them can be changed to

What is It

Why Maintain Hand Tools, Drawing Instruments, Equipment, and

Paraphernalia?

Taking care of the hand tools, drawing instruments, equipment, and

paraphernalia is often taken for granted and left out in the places like, on top of the
table, outside the toolbox and sometimes in any place after each use. Tools will return
the favor if properly maintained and cleaned. Constant maintenance and proper care
of your hand tools, drawing instruments, equipment, and paraphernalia makes any
work or project easier, safer and more effective than usual. Taking good care of them
can extend the usability and saves money because “when you maintain you keep
away the stain!”

Perform Safety Procedures in Maintaining Hand Tools, Drawing Instruments,
Equipment, and Paraphernalia
Below are some tips on how to take care and store properly to get the finest use out
of it.
1. Carefully inspect tools before using them to check if they are in working
condition to prevent an accident.
2. When not in use, hung the T-square.
3. Hand over the tools carefully and avoid throwing it.
4. To protect the drawing papers from tearing, avoid unnecessary sliding of T-
square or triangles.
5. Don’t use excessive force when pulling the steel tape to avoid damaging the
coil spring.

Follow Procedures in Cleaning, Tightening and Simple Repair of Hand Tools,

Drawing Instruments, Equipment, and Paraphernalia

Below are some tips on how to clean, tight and do simple repair of hand tools,
drawing instruments, equipment, and paraphernalia.

1. Clean each tool thoroughly every after use with a damp cloth and wipe it dry
with another piece of cloth before keeping it.
Cleaning can extend the tool’s usability and longevity.
2. To avoid stock-up and clog, apply oil on the movable parts of the measuring
tools such as zigzag rules, calipers, dividers, and compasses.
3. Immediately report defective measuring tools and any hazard to the teacher.

Remember this! “C-I-S” which means “Clean, Inspect and Store”.

While you do the Cleaning, you Inspect some parts of the tools, equipment
and paraphernalia for clogged dust or rusts. In drawing instruments, check
if there are broken edges before you Store to its proper places.

Common Malfunction (Unplanned or Unusual Events) When Using Tools,

Drawing Instruments, Equipment, and Paraphernalia

Malfunctions (other unplanned or unusual events) may not be totally removed, but
it can surely be lessened through careful observations and preventive measures.
There is no exact way or procedure to avoid any unexpected malfunctions. The only
way to minimize them is to have the proper knowledge in using the different tools,
drawing instruments, equipment and paraphernalia.

Here are few tips to minimize malfunctions: Remember “D-A-R-K” which means:

1. Do not work alone so that there is someone who can help you in case of
unexpected malfunctions.
2. Ask assistance from experts if necessary.
3. Read properly the user’s guide before using.
4. Know the tools, drawing instruments, equipment and paraphernalia’s uses
and functions.
