Questions Task 1
1. What have you observed
about the candle before it
was lit?
2. What have you observed
about the candle after it
was lit?
3. Why do you think this
happened?
Questions Task 2
1. What have you observed
on the surface of the glass
before filling it with cold
water?
2. What have you observed
on the surface of the glass
after filling it with cold
water?
3. Why do you think this
happened?
Questions Task 3
1. What have you observed
when you apply alcohol
to your arm (skin)? What
do you feel?
2. Did the alcohol
disappear?
3. Why do you think this
happened?
Questions:
1. What do you think are the changes that took
place when the water is left in an open
container? In a closed container?
2. What is the particle used in the situation given?
Water is the most abundant substance we can see on
our daily life basis. It is everywhere, may it be in the
sea, ocean, and other bodies of water. We use it as well
to hydrate our body and survive.
In the particle nature of matter, it is said that the
particles are always in motion. Water molecules have
kinetic energy that differ from one another. Some
particles are higher, and some are lower which means
some move faster than others.

Recall Questions
1. What usually causes matter to change phases?
A. Elicit (When temperature or pressure change of a system occurs,
phase changes occur.)
2. Is matter created or destroyed during a phase change? The
same amount of matter exists before and after the change —
none is created or destroyed. This concept is called the Law of
Conservation of Mass.)
3. How does phase change affect our life? (Phase changes are
important for our lives because they help provide heat, cool our
food, and regulate our weather, among other things.)
The class will be divided into 2 groups. Each group will be
given an ice block small enough to fit into the beaker. The
students should document the starting temperature of the ice
B. Engage and then turn on the heat source. The students are
instructed to document the temperature at which the ice
begins to melt (change phase) and the time it takes to
completely phase change into liquid.

Individual Activity
The students will fill in the blanks with the correct answers.
A phase change is the change of state of a substance
undergoing from one form to another. The chemical
composition of the substance is retained even when it
undergoes phase change.
Matter undergoes phase change due to the change in
temperature. The higher the (1) __________ and the kinetic
energy, the faster the tiny particles move resulting in the
farther distance of the particles from each other. The lower
the temperature and the (2) __________, the particles move
slowly leading to a closer distance of the particles. As liquid
water evaporates, its temperature (3) __________ and its

kinetic energy increases. As the water vapor in the form of
clouds condenses, its (4) __________ decreases and its kinetic
energy (5) __________. When ice melts, its temperature
increases and its kinetic energy (6) __________. As liquid water
solidifies, both its temperature and kinetic energy (7)
