Soft bodied animals like caterpillars often fall a prey to
voracious hunters like birds or reptiles. Despite having no
means to 'actively' defend themselves, with weapons like
claws or jaws, they have nevertheless, evolved other
equally effective deterrents. A particular species of the
caterpillar lives at an altitude over 2.500 metres in the
Himalayas. It uses prominent colour to inform would - be
predators of its inedibility. In the event that an
inexperienced or adventurous bird did eat the caterpillar, it
would probably vomit it soon after, and subsequently
desist from attacking similar species in future. Though this
would do the unfortunate victim no good, the species
benefit. This is a rare example of the martyr among
animals.

Passage III (questions 25 – 27)

The complexity of the brain is truly beyond description.
When there is a problem, the ability to understand the
problem depends on having some idea about where the
problem originates. Visualization techniques like the MRI
and CT can detect traumatic lesions, but often cannot
visualize non-traumatic problems. Years of relentless
research has provided a detailed understanding of what
parts of the brain are involved with specific activities – this
means that with a thorough neurological examination
problems can often be pinpointed with amazing accuracy.
And once the problem is understood and the diagnosis
made, then an appropriated treatment plan can be
implemented.

A typical neurologic exam has six major components.

They are (1) mental status, (2) cranial nerve exam, (3)
motor exam, (4) reflexes, (5) coordination and gait exam,
and (6) sensory exam. Each component must consist of
several elements that range from easy to difficult. Without
gradations of difficulty it would be impossible to
differentiate patient responses. Also, it is clear that not
every component can be assessed on every patient. For
example, an unconscious patient can be tested, but only
for certain reflexes. Additionally the clinicians will use their
judgment to determine which tests to emphasize and
which tests are less important. Keep in mind that the
components of the neurologic exam contribute to an
anatomical understanding of the location of the problem.
Different elements of the exam target different regions of
the brain.

25.Which one of the following can be an example of a non-

traumatic problem according to the passage?
A.Scar in the brain B.Bleeding in the brain

C.Inability to walk properly caused by head injury

D.Mental disorder due to stress

26.What does the examination of neurological patients essentially involve?

A.Familiarizing oneself with elements of the major

components.

B.Determining how difficult the problem is.

C.Identefying the six major components.

D.Carrying out a thorough interview with the patient.

27.The kind of test to be made for a particular patient depends to some etent on:

A.the location of the problem.

B.the physician’s assessment of the patient.

C.the kind of patient to be treated.

D.the severity of the problem.

Passage IV (Questions 28 – 32)

The world's population is expected to continue growing
until the end of the twenty-first century; that at least was
the general consensus of experts until 2019. Maybe in the
new post-Covid reality, the rate of growth will slow; but
even so, unless COVID-19 or some other new virus
causes millions more deaths than initially predicted, the
world's population will continue to grow, putting ever-
increasing pressure on the natural environment, on
resources, on living space, and most critically on food and
water.

If our world is to survive for much longer, we have no

choice but to reduce the use of natural resources and
cut out wastage. Compared to traditional agriculture,
aeroponics does both. According to a United Nations
FAO report published in 2011, almost half of the fruit and
vegetables produced in the world go to waste – they never
get consumed by the humans for whom they are
grown. Wastage occurs throughout the production and
distribution cycle, during production, during transformation,
during transport, and even – notably in
developed economies – after purchase by the final
customer.
Fifty percent of all fruit and vegetables go to waste. That
is an enormous amount of wastage, and not just in
economic terms. This wastage has a huge impact in
terms of natural resources, particularly space and water,
which in turn will have huge implications for the global
environment.

Cutting out all waste in the production and distribution of

food is an impossible goal. Even people living in
small eco-sustainable communities generate waste. Even
in organic crop production, pests and disease cause
wastage; and even if harvested and distributed locally,
part of a crop will always be wasted. But there is a large
difference between wasting fifty percent of all fruit and
vegetables produced worldwide, and the unreachable goal
of achieving no waste at all. Between 50% and zero, there
is plenty of scope for significantly reducing the volume of
food waste worldwide simply through the use of new and
more efficient production methods. Aeroponics is one such
a method of production.
