Concept Animals with backbones are called vertebrates. They are called
as such because of the presence of bones in their bodies. Vertebrates
include mammals, reptiles, birds, fish and amphibians. Each vertebrate
has spinal column which forms part of a complete internal skeleton.

A. Elicit What are some common animals that you can see on your
communities?

Here are some animals that can be found in our community. Group
them according to the categories the categories that I the teacher will
say.
Animals Found in the Community
HORSE FROG BIRDS
TILAPIA DUCK MILK FISH
LIZARD CATS TURTLE
MOUSE COW DOGS

 Group the animals according to the food they eat.

 Group the animals according to how they are born.
 Group the animals according to their habitat.

Presentation of Objective
B. Engage  Determine the distinguishing characteristics of different groups
of vertebrates.

The teacher will show the story about The Owl and the Lion.
Based from the story.
1. What is the story about?
2. Can you name some characteristics of animals mentioned on the
story?
3. What animals were mentioned in the story?
4. Do they have the same characteristics?
5. If you were the Owl would you do the same thing? What other ways
you can do to defeat the lion?

After the story let’s sing a song about the vertebrates.

Animals with backbone are called vertebrates.

Do you think vertebrates can be regrouped into smaller groups?
Whenever we are to make a group, what factor do we consider?

C. Explore Group Activity

Group I ‘’THE BUILDER’S”

1. I am an animal with backbone.
Some animals like me breathe through their lungs while others
breathe through their gills.
Some have legs, fins and wings for movement.
What kind of animal am I?
TBEVATREE
ANSWER: VERTEBRATES
2. I am a cold-blooded animal with backbone.
I live in water.
My body is covered with scale.
I use my gills to breathe
What kind of animal am I?

ISFH
ANSWER: FISH
3. I am a cold-blooded vertebrate.
I can live both on land and in water.
My body is covered with moist soft skin.
What kind of vertebrate am I?

ANSWER: AMPHIBIAN

4. I am a cold-blooded vertebrate
Most of my kind move by creeping.
My body is covered with dry scaly skin.
I breathe through my lungs.
What kind of vertebrate am I?

ANSWER: REPTILE

5. My body temperature remains the same no matter what the

temperature of the surrounding is.
I have mammary glands.
My body is covered with hair or fur.
What kind of vertebrate am I?

ANSWER: MAMMAL
6. I am a warm-blooded verterbrate.
I have a pair of leg and wings.
My body is covered with feathers
Most of us can fly and are hatched from eggs
What vertebrate am I?

ANSWER: BIRD

Group II- “THE SINGERS”

Compose a song about the distinguishing characteristics of different
groups of vertebrates. Learners will be provided with information sheet.

Group III- “ THE ACTORS”

Think of a situation showing acts of caring and protecting animals
and their habitat. Show them through a role playing.

Group IV- “ THE ORGANIZERS”

Determine the distinguishing characteristics of the different groups
of vertebrates. Present them through informational text using
description/ enumeration type of graphic organizer.

Presentation of output
D. Explain *Discussion and Analysis
1. What are the five groups of vertebrates?
2. What characteristics are common among fishes, reptiles,
amphibians, mammals and birds?
3. Which among the groups of vertebrates are warm-blooded?cold-
blooded?
4. How do warm-blooded animals differ from cold-blooded animals?
5. How do amphibians differ from reptiles?
6. Why can reptiles live entirely on land?
7. Some animals are being captured and taken as pets, do you think
it’s a proper way to protect animals? Why?
8. How will show your concern for animals?

E. Elaborate Remember:
Generalization:
1. What is the common characteristics of vertebrates?
2. What are the different classifications of vertebrates?
3. Give some distinguishing characteristics amphibians, reptiles, fish,
mammals, birds.
4. Give examples of animals that belong to each classification of
verterbrates.

Classification of Vertebrates

1. Amphibians- means “dual life”. The young amphibian lives in water

while the adult amphibian lives on land. However, they still return to the
water to breed. They have moist and soft skins and are born with gills
which make them, survive in water. When they mature, these gills
disappear and develop into lungs which enable them to survive on
land.

2. Reptiles- comes from the Latin word reptilia, which means to creep.
Most reptiles move by creeping or crawling. Reptiles are cold-blooded
animals. They breathe through their lungs. Snakes, lizards, crocodiles
and turtles are examples of reptiles.

3. Fish- are the simplest vertebrates. They live in water. Most of them
have skeletons made of bones. Some fishes have skeletons made of
cartilage. Cartilage is a firm and flexible substance. They have special
organs called gills on either side of their heads through the openings.
As water enters the fish `s mouth, it passes over the gills. Gills also
serve to strain food from water, so the constant swallowing of the water
that passes into fish`s mouth and out through the gills provide food as
well as oxygen for the animal. Fishes are cold-blooded animals. Its
body temperature is the same at its environment.

4. Mammals -The term mammals came from the Greek word mamma
which means “breast”. They are the only group of animals with
mammary glands which produce milk to nourish their young. All
mammals are warm-blooded. They are able to self-regulate their
internal temperature. Their bodies are covered in fur or hair that serves
as protection. They have more developed oragan system. Most
mamma;ls are viviparous.

5. Birds are warm-blooded animals. They are able to regulate their

body’s temperature. They remain active in cold and warm climates.
They have respiratory system that includes air sacs which give them a
unique mechanism for breathing. Most birds can fly with few exceptions
such as ostrich, penguin and kiwi. They have feathers and wings.

TRIVIA:

Facts About Vertebrates

The largest animals in the main ecosystems are vertebrates.
Vertebrates are the only animals to have an adaptive immune system.
Invertebrates massively outnumber vertebrates. There are around
60,000 vertebrate species, compared to millions of invertebrate
species.

The table shows the number of threatened species of animals in the

Philippines.
- Which group of animals has the most number of threatened
species?
- What is the total number of threatened species of animals?
- What operation did you use?
- What should we do save these species from extinction?
- What are the possible reasons of the increasing number of
threatened animal species?
Application:
Who among you are YES- O members?
As a YES-O member, what activity can you suggest that can help
save the habitat of animals from destruction?
