CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
When students were young, they often asked
themselves of what they want to be when they grow up.
Students depend their choices based on their
amazement and the person they idolized. Dreaming was
limitless. But growing up the closer they get to
choose their career path. The things consider change
overtime. Making it hard for someone to choose what
to choose. Nowadays, Teenagers find it hard to choose
what career path they are going to take. Grade 10
students have no idea on what they want nor they have
any idea what opportunities are available in the
future. Students should know what are their skills
and abilities that will enable them to know what are
the suitable career path for them. Being interested
in a particular career is very important in decision
making. It is not a straight forward task and it
involves a difficult process of decision making.
All people experienced choosing career they are
going to take and choosing career is an important
stage in ones’ lives. Grade 10 student do not have
any idea of what they want. All they know is they are
going to choose a career/track/strand. Students also
experienced being confused or unaware of our career
path. For now, students were still unsure of what
path of career will suit on their interest. Students
do not have a clear vision of what they want. Going
back before choosing, there are many factors to be
considered before ending up on your final decision.
When choosing a career, they should think it wisely
because a wrong choice can sometimes lead to failure,
disappointment. Some of the students do not end up
taking the career path they want because they were
influenced by the people around them. But some of

1
them take this path because these are the tracks
available offered by the school. So, choosing the
career they do not want or does not fit them will
sometimes make them regret. So they should be wise on
choosing the career they want as their choice that
will have a great impact in their future.
According to Dr. A.S. Kazi pp.187-196, (2017),
Making a choice is a defining phase on every
student's life. Students have to consider several
factors before arriving at a decision, one wrong
choice can lead to failure and disappointment. That
is why they must be careful on what they choose,
because if they choose the course they do not want,
this may affect their life as a person in the
community. Career has a big impact on their future,
it will determine their identity and role in society
in the future. In choosing career preferences they
must know their interest, values, personality,
strengths and weaknesses.
This study gives awareness on Grade 10 students
why they need to choose their career preferences. It
is valuable to choose career preferences as it gives
an important role in their lives. This is a part of
the steps on achieving their goals in lives in the
future. It is the one that identify their future
role. Likewise, this also helps them to be aware on
what and how to manage their personal circumstances
in life. Moreover, choosing career preferences can be
a starting point in terms of pursuing their goals in
the future. Being able to choose path that is
suitable and matched their desired interest in life
can be a basis that they choose that right path and
the decision making very well. The career path that
they choose can be a classification of what they want
to do in their life in terms of works and
opportunities.
The purpose of this study is to determine the
factors that affects the Grade 10 students in
choosing their career preferences. The factors that
affect the Grade 10 students in choosing their career

2
path will lead, because of the situation inside the
house of the students or family, trends in the
community, Senior High School offerings, friends, and
even themselves. Factors that affect Grade 10
students in terms of career choice is important
because it gives them an idea on why they cannot
choose or select easily what was their desired career
path in life.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter shows a retrospective presentation
of previously written material: Research Literature
and Studies, Conceptual and Theoretical Framework
that has relevance and significance to the research
under considered.

RELATED LITERATURE
Having a career preference is very important to
every student since it is the one that classify the
phases where they are suitable enough in some kind of
courses in the future. Knowing themselves are example
of classifying what are the suitable career for them
due to their capabilities and skills as a person.
Making a choice is a great and incredible stage where
they should balance what are their preferences in
terms of something they do or they always do in their
everyday life.
According to Penedilla and Rosaldo (2007), Young
students have diverse dreams and interest in life.
There is an old adage which inspires people to
succeed:” If there is a will, there is a way”. In
choosing a career, suitability to the interest of the
students is given importance.
Likewise, choosing a career gives importance on
suitability and interest of the students. It is one
of the factors that a student must consider before
choosing the right career path he/she is going to

7
take. The suitability and interest are one of the
major factors to consider because if the students
choose the career, he/she do not want it may lead to
failure or disappointment. “If there is a will, there
is a way”, it is the adage that makes people inspire
to do what they want, if they love what they are
doing there is a way or there is a possibility that
they can be successful in that path they take.
Nowadays, students have dreams that they want are
their interest. So, it is important to know the
students' interest so that they can choose wisely.
According to Super’s (1990), Developmental theory
of career development, High School students are at
the exploration stage of career development, which
involves crystallizing and specifying their
occupational preferences, while also making
preliminary decisions about their career choice.
The above related literature focuses on the
students' career development. Moreover, at this stage
student have to make career decisions for them to
explore. So, students must know first what are their
specific talents, skills, abilities and capabilities
in life for them to be able to select the suitable
career path they are going to take. It is the
smartest way to develop their career as they explore
what were the particular career path are suitable for
them. Through these they can lessen some mistakes on
choosing decisions that will make them regret and
will lead them into a somewhat catastrophe in their
lives.
According to Psychology.com (2017), Being
adolescent can be extremely lonely. It is not unusual
to have a feeling that there is no one turn to when
problems come arise. This is the stage where major
decisions and peer concern affect the courses of
their lives. Most adolescents are pressured to
perform and succeed, which experience severe stress
in meeting these expectations. In the related
literature above focuses on the adolescents facing a

8
problem due to making major decisions in life.
Decisions that will determine their future courses.
Furthermore, it also stated that being adolescent
has some problems that dealing on it will make a big
impact on their emotions in life. Moreover, it is the
reason why most of the students are pressured and
stressed to just meet the expectations for them. Due
to these being an adolescent can be merely defined as
a lonely phase in ‘their lives. So, students must
focus on the goal that they want to pursue in the
future not just the only the wants that the society
want they want to be. They do not need to fit on what
the standards of the society they might consider
their own feelings and likings in life. It is
important to choose what career path they want to
avoid stress and depression.
According to Holland (2017), Career choice is an
important process that people go through in their
lives, especially for those who seek work
satisfaction. John Holland developed a theory
suggesting that career is determined by the
interaction between personality and development.
Choosing career involves the factor of their own
personality, they must consider this factor as this
will determine what they want, this will help them
identify what they want in the future. Environment
also help them determine the career that the grade 10
students will choose. Environments involves the
people around them that can affect their career
choice. every student should choose their career
preference, as it is an important step that people go
through in their lives. So, it is a must that
students should consider the factors that will affect
them in their choice.
According to Fizer (2013), Choosing the right
career that is becoming more and more important for
young students today. Students have to take into
account many things when choosing career and college
major. Many factors can influence a student’s

9
decision, including parent, coaches, religious
figures, or any role models in a student’s life.
This literature states that choosing career
becomes one of the most important stages in student’s
life. In choosing career, there are many steps and
factors to be considered to come up on a final
decision that will make the students be satisfied of
the career choice he/she may choose. A student’s
decision, including parents, coaches, religion
figures or any role model in a student’s life are
just some of the factors that will influence the
student's decision. Many factors can influence every
choice of every individual that will lead them to
make their final choice.
RELATED STUDIES
According to the study written by Mwaa,
University of Nairobi (2016), entitled” Parental
Factors Influencing Career Choice Among High School
Students in Nairobi Country”. The purpose of this
study was to investigate the extent by which parental
factors influence career choice among form four
students in Nairobi Country. The study also sought to
establish the relationship and significance of this
parental factors and the student career choice. The
population of the study was all the 27,614 form four
students who had enrolled for the Kenya national
examinations council (KNEC)examinations for the year
2016.
The study above focuses on the parental factors
influencing career choice among High School students
in Nairobi Country. This study implies that there are
significant relationship between parents and students
in terms of choosing career preferences of the
students in Nairobi Country. Moreover, it also shows
the exact list of enrollees of the students for Kenya
National Examinations (Council) Examinations for the
year 2016. They are investigating some of the factors
that influence high school students in choosing
career preferences. This study is important to
implement as it gives a strong support or it answers

10
the questions of the students on what are the factors
affecting or influencing them on choosing career
path. It gives an information on other researchers
that conducting or going to conduct research about
this topic or problem. Also, it can show the path
that the students might consider when they are going
to take their specific career choice that will
determine their role pattern in the future.
According to the study written by Sharif, et al.,
IBT Journal of Business Studies 15(1),33-46(2019),
entitled “Factors Influencing Career Choices”. This
study attempted to explore the roles of Mothers,
Fathers, Tutors, Future Income, Future Status and
Societal difference by labelling all of such factors
as “Influencers” on the career choice of young
students. The result of the study highlighted the
relative importance of various career choice
influences & that averages of variables of influence
are statistically different F (4.215,699.727)
=27.405, P.
Likewise, in this study, the objective is to
determine the factors that affect the decision of
student in choosing a career. One of the importance
of this study is that it determines the roles of
Mothers, Fathers, Tutors, Future Income, Future
Status and Societal difference. They are considered
to be influencers on the career choice.
According to the study written by Kazi and
Ahklaq, Journal of Research and Reflections in
Education, Volume 11, Issue No.2(2017), entitled”
Factors Affecting Students’ Career Choice”. Making a
career choice is a defining phase in every student’s
life. Students have to consider several factors
before arriving at a decision. The purpose of this
research was to see the factors which affect the
influence of several factors such as parental
education, profession and income on the career
decisions of 432 students from two sector
Universities in Lahore City. The influence of peers
on the respondent' choice of the subject

11
specialization was also investigated along with any
impressions taken from the media.
Before making choice, students must take into
account number of things. This study sought to
identify the elements that influence the career
choices of students from two public sector
Universities in Lahore City and these elements
included parental education, and income. Hence, the
influence of peers and other factors in making career
choice is important.
According to the study written by Shumba and
Naong(2012), entitled" Factors influencing students’
career choice and aspiration in South Africa”. The
study found that the family; the ability of the
learner self to identify his/her preferred career
choice; and teachers were significant factors that
influence the career choice and aspirations of
students.
The study shows the factors that affect or
influence the students in choosing their career. The
study was engaging to the students to the factors
that are affecting them in choosing their career
preferences. Moreover, it implies that these factors
are the one that giving a big impact on students in
terms of classifying or identifying what career path
they are going to take in the future. The study
represents that these factors should be learnt by the
students to enable them to be aware on what are the
factors that are affecting or influencing them in
their career choice. So, this study is important to
the present research as it implies significant
factors that may affect in choosing career and their
aspirations in life.
According to the study written by Tang, Et Al.,
Journal of Vocational Behavior 54(1), 142-157(1999),
entitled" Asian American’s Career Choices: A Path
Model to Examine Factors Influencing Their Career
Choices”. This study investigates factors that might
influence Asian American’s career choices and tests

Figure 1 represents the inputs of the researchers
on the factors affecting career preferences of grade
10 students, ways on how these factors affect the
career preferences of Grade 10 students, and impacts
of choosing career preferences in Grade 10 students.
Moreover, the process of gathering data is through
the use of survey checklist and interview which will
be analyzed by using statistical data. Inputs are
acquired through the use of survey checklist,
interview, and statistical analysis. The output of
this study will be a proposed symposium.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
Vincent Tinto, who is recognized as one of the
leading researchers in the area of student's
retention and departures, hypothesized (1993) that
for students to persist in college, they must be
successfully integrated into the internal social
communities of the institutions. Braxton(2000b)
extended. Tinto’s theory to add the integration
effects of external communities and student
characteristics on academic persistence.
This study is important for the students to achieve
their dream or their goal in the future. They focus
in the future of students. It is considered to be the
academic persistence of people in a community to
socialized. This study is difficult for every student
but when they studying carefully, they will get a
successful future.

GAP-BRIDGED OF THE STUDY

Prior studies have been conducted about factors
affecting the career choice of Grade 10 students. The
review of related literature and related studies

14
indicate the factors that can affect the career
choices of students. The past studies are related and
similar to the present study as the study state that
choosing a career is one of the most important stages
of every Grade 10 student. Also, this research shows
possible effect to the student if they do not choose
their desired choice. Thus, this study will focus
more on determining the possible effect of every
student. Hence, the difference of the present study
to the past is on the grade level of secondary
students. In addition, the local of the study also
differ. Also, the variables included in the research
paper are different.

SYNTHESIS OF THE STATE-OF-THE-ART

According to Penedilla and Rosaldo, choosing a
career preference, suitability to the interest of the
students is given importance. Furthermore, choosing
career will be significant to the learners. Their
interest is aligned to the specific skills they
possess.
Career development of someone’s personality is
one factor when choosing a career. Moreover,
personality provides an interaction with the career
development. In this stage, students are at the
exploration stage of career development while also
making preliminary decisions about their career
choices (Supers, Holland).
According to Psychology.com and Fizer, this is
the stage where major decisions and peer concern
affect the courses of their lives. Most adolescent
are pressured to perform and succeed, which
experience severe stress in meeting their
expectations. So, students have to take into account
many things when choosing career and college major.
15
Fizer also emphasizes the factors that can influence
a student's decisions includes parents, coaches,
religious figures or any role models in students'
life.

CHAPTER 3
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY
This chapter presents the methodology applied in
this study. Included here are the research design,
respondents of the study, research instrument, data
gathering procedure statistical instrument of data
that are all necessarily needed for the
credibility of the entire study.

method to define the effectiveness of choosing a
career preferences of Grade 10 students in Rizal
National High School (S.Y.2022-2023). Differentiate
the purpose of choosing a career preference in the
Grade 10 students. Evaluate the impact of choosing a
career preference to the students. Justify the
importance of choosing a career preference in Grade
10 students. Explains why choosing a career

16
preference is right to them. To answer the research
problems of the study a survey checklist and
interview were developed to determine the factors
affecting career preferences of Grade 10 students.

RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY

The sources of data were drawn from the eighty-
seven (87) Grade 10 students enrolled at Rizal
National High School. RNHS is a medium-sized school
with a total of 463 students. The respondents of this
study with the use of Slovin’s formula will be 71 out
of 87 Grade 10 students. In these 71 respondents
there were 10 students who participated and answered
the interview questions as part of the sample size of
Purposive sampling.

INSTRUMENT OF THE STUDY

To determine the factors choosing the career
preferences of Grade 10 students in Rizal National
High School, 18 items test is made for the
respondents. The questions are about the SOP or the
statement of the problem of the study including: (1)
What are the factors affecting career preferences of
grade 10 students in Rizal National High School
(S.Y.2022-2023)?; (2) How do these factors affect the
career preferences of Grade 10 students in Rizal
National High School (S.Y.2022-2023)?; (3) What are
the impacts of choosing career preferences in Grade
10 students in Rizal National High School (S.Y.2022-
2023)?. Moreover, the question focuses on how these
factors influence the career choice Grade 10
students. Slovin’s formula is also used to determine
the sample size of the study along with survey
checklist and interview as a tool and instrument on
gathering data.

composed of 10 factors. The highest factors that
affect the career preferences of Grade 10 Humility
students is the skills and abilities with a total
percentage of 29.16% wherein a total of 7 respondents
choose the latter. Followed by the Trends in the

community and Environment which are chosen by both 5
respondents and a total percentage of 20.83%. And
then next are the peer influence and values which
have the same percentage which is 8.33% selected by 2
respondents. The last factors that were chosen by
both 1 respondent and have a percentage of 4.16% are
the family background, interest, and opportunities.
Unfortunately, curriculum offerings and culture were
not chosen by the respondents. This infers that the
factor that affect the career choice of students is
skills and abilities.

This is supported in the study of Braza and

Guillo in 2015 entitled “Socio-demographic
characteristics and career choice of private
secondary school students”, Students need to look for
possible factors that affect their decision making.
They need to choose a career that fits in their
skills and abilities which they want to engage in.

Student D “I think the factors that
can affect the career
preferences of grade 10
students is values”

The table above shows the factors that affect the

career preferences of Grade 10 Humility students. The
response of Student A as a factors that affect
his/her career choice are “interest, environment, and
skills and abilities”. While Student B’s response is
“The factors that affect the career preferences of
Grade 10 students is skills and abilities”. On the
other hand, Student C stated “There are different
factors that affect the career preference of Grade 10
students, examples are their financial capability and
their environment”. Lastly, Student D respond that
“The factors that can affect the career preferences
of grade 10 students is values”. This infers that the
most answered factors that affect the career
preferences of students are their skills and
abilities, and environment.

23
This is supported in the related study entitled
“Factors affecting career choice among senior
secondary school students in Obio/Akpor Local
Government Area of River State (Implications to
counselling)” written by Eremie and Okwulehie in
2018, The study investigated factors affecting career
choices among senior secondary school students in
River State. Three recommendation were made (1) There
is needs for students to beware of environmental
factors that could interfere with their career
choices. (2) Parents and teachers should prepare
students for career awareness at early age. Parents
should work closely with their children in career
decision making process allowing students to choose
from their interest area.

2.How do these factors affect the career preferences

of Grade 10 students?

STUDENTS RESPONSES
Student A “Because students will
consider his/ her
abilities in choosing
career”
Student B “It affects the students
because if you lack skill
and ability, it can
affect your career
preference in the future”
Student C “These factors give a
hard time to the students
on choosing their career”
Student D “Lack of good value and
because of it your
behavior become rude and
disrespectful that can
affect your personality”

The table implies on how do these factors affect

the career preferences of Grade 10 students.
According to Student A, his/her career will be based

24
on his/her skills and abilities. While Student B
stated, “It affects the students because if you lack
skill and ability, it can affect your career
preference in the future”. Student C on the other
hand says, “These factors give a hard time to the
students on choosing their career”. The response of
Student D was “Lack of good value and because of it
your behavior become rude and disrespectful that can
affect your personality”

This is supported in the related study written by

Ahmed, Sharif, and Ahmad in 2017 entitled “Factors
influencing students’ career choices: empirical
evidence from business students”. The motivation
behind this research study was to investigate the
factors that influence the career selection choice of
student and create a possible alignment between their
preferences and the institutions curriculum and
offerings. The interest in the subject is also
related and has some linkage with personality type.
Mismatch of the personality and lack of interest in
the subject is dangerous, and could end up into
disastrous results in terms of the student
dissatisfaction, demotivation, lack of productivity
leading to increased dropouts and career failure.

percentage of 41.6% answered family background as
well as the 8 factor which is the skills and
abilities, while 2 respondents with the total
percentage of 8.33% stated curriculum offerings.
Whereas 1 respondent equivalent to 4.16% choose
interest, and values. However, more of the
respondents answered peer influence, trends in the
community, environment opportunities, and culture.

This is supported in the study of Shumba and

Naong in 2012 entitled “Factor influencing students
career choice and aspiration in south Africa” wherein
the study found that the family; the ability of the
learner self to identify his/her preferred career
choice; and teachers were significant factors that
influence the career choice and aspirations of
students. Therefore, family background is a great
factor in influencing career decision making of
students.

Motivational aspects, including product importance
and usage, provided the strongest and most consistent
explanations of teenagers' perceived relative
influence across stages and purchase situations. In
addition, parental employment status positively
influenced teens' perceived influence of durable
family purchases. Mothers and daughters generally did
not differ in their ratings of the daughters'
perceived influence in the durable purchase decision
making process, while fathers' and sons' ratings did
differ.

The table implies the answer of Grade 10

Prosperity students on the factors that affect the
career choice of Grade 10 Prosperity students. The
data above states the answer of student A wherein,
“He/she think the factors that affect the career
preferences of Grade 10 student is skills and
abilities”. Also, student B stated that “Factors that
can affect choosing our career preferences are family
background and skills and abilities.” Lastly student
C “Skills and abilities are the one who affect the
career choices of Grade 10 students.”

This data was verified by the related study of

Koech, Et al. in 2016 entitled “Factors influencing
career choices among undergraduate students in public
universities in Kenya: A case study of University of
Eldoret”, Career choice is a complex decision for
undergraduate students since it determine the kind of
profession that the student intends to pursue in
life. As student try to make career choices, they
face problem of matching their career preferences
with their abilities in academic performance.

2.How do these factors affect the career preferences

of Grade 10 students?
29
STUDENTS RESPONSES
Student A “Since some of my fellow
students is having a hard
time in enhancing their
skills and abilities,
also base on my
experience family
background can affect too
since some of our family
member have an opinion or
suggestion when it comes
to choosing career.”
Student B “Skills and abilities
affect the career of
Grade 10 students because
some of the student do
not believe on their
abilities and skills
because they don’t have
self-confidence”
Student C “Skills and abilities
affect the career
preferences of Grade 10
students because most of
the students have a
difficulty in studying
because of their low of
skills and abilities”

The table above shows on how do these factors

affect the career preferences of Grade 10 Prosperity
students. Student A said, his/her fellow student is
having a hard time in enhancing their skills and
abilities, but base on his/her experience family
background can also affect the career choice of the
students. However, Student B responded that “Skills
and abilities affect the career of Grade 10 students
because some of the student do not believe on their
abilities and skills because they don’t have self-
confidence”. Likewise, Student C also answered that
skills and abilities affect the career choice of

30
students because most of the students have a
difficulty in studying because of their low of skills
and abilities. These clearly implies that skills and
abilities affect the students in choosing career that
enable them to have experience a hard time choosing
properly.

This is supported in the related literature

written by Munawir Et al. in 2018, Career maturity is
influenced by several factors, including internal
locus of control and self-concept. Someone who has an
internal locus of control has a perception that the
measures themselves would produce a positive thing
that makes their work more successful. The self-
concept is considered critical to the success of life
because when someone feels good about himself and his
ability, to predict a person's life will be
successful.

This is supported of a study of Theresa Lawer

Dede in 2015 entitled “Factors That Inform Students'
Choice of Study and Career”. The study revealed
among other things that career guidance program was
not given prominent attention for the full benefit of
students. Parents, teachers, and counsellors ought to
33
be familiar with major factors which influence
vocational or career development of individuals. This
is necessary because career theorists believe that
individuals have certain abilities, interests,
personality traits and other characteristics that
inform one’s career choice. In other words, knowing
oneself and knowing the career opportunities existing
in one’s environment can help an individual make a
good vocational adjustment They become aware of
interests and abilities and how they are related to
work opportunities. They also identify possible
fields and levels of work consistent with these
abilities and interests and they secure training to
develop skills and advance occupational entry and or
enter occupations that would fulfil their interests
and abilities.

3)What are the impacts of choosing career

preferences in Grade 10 students in Rizal
National High School (S.Y.2022-2023)?

4)What will be proposed as a result of the study?

FINDINGS
After the data collection and interpretation, the
following were the findings of the study:

1)Findings revealed that Grade 10 students answered

skills and abilities, and family background on
what are the factors affecting the career
preferences of Grade 10 students. Further, this

students.

4)There is a supposed activity to develop awareness

on choosing career properly for Grade 10 students
which is a proposed symposium gathering students
of Rizal National High School.

CONLUSIONS
Based from the findings, the researchers had come
up with the following conclusions:

38

abilities that are suited to their aligned
courses.

4)To help the Grade 10 students determine their

career preferences, the researchers concluded to
conduct a symposium.

RECOMMENDATIONS
With respect to the aforesaid conclusions, the
following recommendations were drawn:

39
1)Conduct career guidance program to Grade 10
students for them to be aware of their future.
Moreover, this will help them to look for a job
aligned to their skills and abilities.

2)Teachers should do activities that will help the

students to develop and strengthen their skills
and abilities as it will be one factor to be
considered in choosing career. Parents should
also give advices for their children to choose
properly.

3)The school administrators should conduct

activities or organize group in school wherein
the students are advice to join as this will help
them develop the skills and abilities and also
their interest that will lead them on choosing
their career properly.

4)Conduct seminars or symposium that will develop

awareness on choosing career properly for grade
10 students.
