Shell The fluid-contained volume of the vessel is 5 m 3 ≈ 305118 . 8 ¿3.

We design a horizontal cylinder pressure vessel with the two 2 :1 S.E. Head.
So the fluid-contained volume of the vessel equal to the sum of fluid-contained volume of shell and 2
heads. This can be expressed by the following equation:

V vessel =V shell +2 V head (1)

Where:
V vessel : total fluid-contained volume ( ¿3 )
V shell : fluid-contained volume inside shell ( ¿3 )
V head : fluid-contained volume inside head ( ¿3 )
For 2:1 S.E. head:
3
π Di
V head = (2)
24

For cylindrical shell:

2
π Di L
V shell =
4

We chose the ratio of L/ D is equal to 4

2 3
π Di h 3.5 π Di
So that: V shell = = (3)
4 4
2 3 3
π Di L π Di 25 π Di
V vessel =V shell +2 V head = + 2⋅ =
4 24 24

Substituting the values, we get:

3
25 π Di
305118 . 8=
24

Solving the equation, we get: D i ≈ 45 . 345 (in)

The inner diameter of the vessel is D i=45 .345 (in)
Di
⇒ The inner radius of the vessel is: r i= =22 .6725 (in)
2
L
From the ratio of =3.5⇒ L=3.5 × 45 .345=158 .7075 (in)
Di
The length of the shell is L=158 . 7075 (in)

SUS 304 is selected as the fabrication material:

Parameter Denotation Value

Density ρ 8000 kg/m3
Stress S 18800 psi
Wield efficiency e 0.85
Corrosion rate C 5 mm
Condition to apply calculation: Pi <1.25 Se = 1.25×18800×0.85 = 19975 psi (satisfied)

At 25 degrees Celsius and 6 MPa, natural gas is in a gas state.

Calculate the density of Natural gas:

6
PM 6 x 10 Pa x 2 . 016
ρ= =
RT 8314 x (273+25)

where M is the molar mass of green hydrogen

Substituting the values, we get: ρfluid =4 . 882 kg /m3
Weight of the fluid: mfluid =ρfluid ⋅V fluid =4 . 882 x 5=24 . 41 kg ≈ 53 . 81 (Ibs)

SHELL’S THICKNESS

The minimum shell thickness is determined by two sections:

For the longitudinal section:
P t ⋅r i 870.2264 × 22. 672
t L= = =0 .61 (in)
2. S . E+0.4 P t 2 ×18800 × 0.85+0.4 × 870.2264

For the circumferential section:

Pt ⋅r i 870.2264 × 22.672
t c= = =1 .276 (in)
S . E−0.6 Pt 18800 ×0.85−0.6 ×870.2264

After adding the corrosion allowances:

For the longitudinal section: t L =0. 61+0.125=0.735 (in)
For the circumferential section: t 'c =1 .276+ 0.125=1 . 401 (in)

⇒ t shell-min =max ( t 'L ; t 'C ) =1 . 401=¿ t Actual=1. 45∈¿

Base on the minimum thickness of shell requirement we chose the shell's thickness is equal to 1
(in)

Maximum allowable pressure for shell

2 SE t shell 2× 18800× 0.85 ×1 . 45
P L= = =2097 . 682( psi)
r i−0.4 t shell 22 .672−0.4 × 1. 45
SE t shell 18800 × 0.85 ×1 . 45
P C= = =984 .240( psi)
r i+ 0.6 t shell 22 . 672+0.6 ×1

We need to compare the maximum allowable pressure of the shell in oder to check if it is
acceptable or not

Pcompare =min ( PC ; P L )=984 .240 ( psi )

This result is acceptable since the Pcompare is larger than the total pressure of the vessel.
This shows that the chosen shell thickness is safe and will be adopted in this study.
Weight of the shell:

mshell =π t shell ( Di +t shell ) L. ρmaterial =π × 1 . 45×(45.345+1 . 45)× 158 .7075 ×0.29=9810 . 988 (Ibs)

. Head design
The inner height of 1 head:

D i 45 . 345
h= = =11. 336 (in)

The crown radius of 1 head:

r crown =0.9045 Di=0.9045× 45 . 345=41 .014 (in)

The knuckle radius of 1 head:

r knuckle =0.1727 Di=0.1727 × 45 . 345=7 . 831 (in)

Head thickness

Pt D i 870.2264 ×45 . 345

t= = =1 .241 (in)
2 SE−0.2 Pt 2 ×18800 × 0.85−0.2 × 870.2264

After adding the corrosion allowances:

t head −min=1 . 241+0.125=1. 366 (in)

In order to manufacture easily, we chose the thickness of the head to 1 ( which is equal to the
thickness of the shell)

⇒ t head =1 . 4 (in)

The thickness of head is 1.4 (in)

Maximum allowable pressure for head
2 SEt ¿ 2× 18800 ×0.85 ×1 . 4
Pmax = = =980.690( psi)
D i+ 0.2t ¿ 45 .345+ 0.2× 1. 4

This result is acceptable since the Pmax is larger than the total pressure of the vessel. This shows
that the chosen head thickness is safe and will be adopted in this study. Total weight of two

NOZZLE DESIGN

In our project we will design 2 nozzle and 1 manhole for the pressure vessel.
Firstly, we must chose the flange in order to get the neccesary parameter values for nozzle
