Open Syllables and
Closed Syllables

A Little Bit About Open

Syllables and Closed Syllables
What are they?
Open Syllable: If there is NO consonant after the vowel, the vowel will
say its long sound (the door is OPEN).
Closed Syllable: If there is a consonant after the vowel, the vowel will
say its short sound (the door is CLOSED).

Why do we teach them?

Knowing when a syllable is open or closed will help kids know if they will
say a vowel's long or short sound! This is incredibly helpful when we
start reading multisyllabic words (words with more than one syllable!).

How else can I help?

If your learner is struggling to read an open or closed syllable. Help
them figure it out cover the last syllable and just show them the first
syllable. Have them figure out if it is open or closed. Then show them
the second syllable and have them figure out if it is open or closed. Put
the syllables together to read the word!
