TUTORIAL SHEET 2 2019/2020

1. Find the asymptotes and sketch the graphs of the functions below
1 𝑥 2+1 𝑥−1
( i) f(x) = 𝑥 (ii) f(x) = (iii) f(x) = 𝑥 2−1
𝑥 2−1

2. Find the critical points for each of the following functions and use the second
derivative test to find maximum or minimum values
i) f(x,y) = 4𝑥 2 + 9𝑦 2 + 8𝑥 − 36𝑦 + 24
ii) f(x,y) = 1⁄3 𝑥 3 + 𝑦 2 + 2𝑥𝑦 − 6𝑥 − 3𝑦 + 4
iii) (x,y)= 𝑥 2 − 4𝑦 2 + 2𝑥𝑦 + 4𝑥 − 6𝑦 + 4

3. Use Lagrange Multiplier method to find all possible extreme points, maximum value
and minimum value of the following functions subject to their corresponding
constraints.
(i) f(x,y) = 81𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 subject to the constraint 4𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 = 9
(ii) f(x,y)= 8𝑥 2 -2y subject to the constraint 𝑥 2 +𝑦 2 =1
(iii) f(x,y)= 𝑥 2 +2𝑦 2 subject to the constraint 𝑥 2 +𝑦 2 =1

4. Find the second partial derivatives of

𝑦
(i) f(x,y)=𝑥+𝑦
(ii) f(x,y)=ln(𝑥 2 + 2𝑦).

5. For a rectangular whose perimeter is 20m, use the Lagrange multiplier method to find
the dimensions that will maximize the area.

6. Suppose you are running a factory, producing some sort of widget that requires steel
as a raw material. Your costs are predominantly human labor, which is $20 per hour
for your workers, and the steel itself, which runs for $170 per ton. Suppose your
revenue R is loosely modeled by the following equation:
2 1
R(h,s)=200ℎ ⁄3 𝑠 ⁄3 , Where h represents hours of labor and s represents tons of steel.
If your budget is $20,000, what is the maximum possible revenue?
