The development triggered by the 8th Mediterranean Games was not just about sports
facilities and infrastructure. At that time, the construction of the great House of Youth
began, and the Croatian National Theatre was reconstructed. In the same year, the
historic core of Split with Diocletian’s Palace was among the first to be enrolled in
the UNESCO World Heritage list. The people of Split are still proud of that time,
and the need to think big and unbelievable, because they know it is possible.

mladih i obnovljeno Hrvatsko narodno kazalište. Iste godine povijesna jezgra
Splita s Dioklecijanovom palačom upisana je na UNESCO-vu listu svjetske
kulturne baštine. Među građanima Splita još živi ponos na to razdoblje i potreba
da se misli u velikom mjerilu i sanja neostvarivo, jer znaju da je to moguće

P ostoje sretni trenuci u povijesti našega grada kada su Splićani raz-
mišljali u velikom mjerilu, kada su sanjali nemoguće i to su reali-
zirali. Nekoliko puta dosad Split je imao ambicije veće od očekivanih
s obzirom na položaj i širi kontekst. Sve je počelo carskom palačom
velikih dimenzija, masivnim sustavima infrastrukture i organizacije teri-
torija, jer se rimski car odlučio skrasiti upravo ovdje, daleko od Rima,
motiviran zajamčenom kvalitetom življenja. Poslije je u nekoliko navrata
položaj važne luke raznih država kojima je Split pripadao potaknuo iz-
gradnju i razvoj gradskoga života, zapravo značajno veće od njegovih
stvarnih potreba – nicale su javne građevine i institucije po mjeri velikih
monarhija. U 20. stoljeću industrijalizacija i vojska potaknule su novu Gripe Sport Complex

je Split 1979. bio domaćin VIII. Mediteranskim igrama, koje su ga do-
slovno preporodile. Ubrzano se širi i razvija kao industrijski grad i regi-
onalno središte. Grade se nove stambene četvrti i osmišljavaju prateći
prostori i sadržaji, doseljeno ruralno stanovništvo ubrzano se asimilira,
osjeća se duh napretka.

Bačvice is a real Split landmark. The nest of sand and warm sea, a
Mediterranean experience, whose charms are long remembered –

warmly identify with its spaces, and global acknowledgement of this big
project is increasing. Hopefully, we will know not only how to preserve,
but also to improve the quality of Split 3 - our own “concrete utopia” real-
ised, a place of cultural significance, comparable to Diocletian’s palace.

the 65th time. Some 50 artistic programmes will revive the city, play it and artfully
enrich it, transforming it, according to ancient Diocletian’s idea, into a great stage of the
human creative spirit and the summer theatre capital of this part of the Mediterranean.

 T he emergence of theatrical art developed under the open skies of the
Mediterranean, in ancient Greece. Only two millennia later, during the
Renaissance, theatrical art left its place under the stars and took shelter
below the roof of the theatrical building. It returned to the open space of
the Mediterranean in the mid-twentieth century, on the wave of optimism
that swept Europe in the post-war years. The old continent was covered
with summer theatre festivals, and, during the following decades, with the
development of tourism, the initiative evolved into a massive festival move-
ment in the open spaces of continental Europe during the warmest season.
With its strong theatre tradition, in the 1950’s Croatia joined the Eu-
ropean family and launched two summer festivals. Dubrovnik Summer
Festival began in 1950 and four years later the Split Summer Festival.
Both events have successfully survived to this day, having become major
international festivals, a source of Croatian pride, that attract thousands
of artists every year.
It is no wonder that Split has one of the most famous theatre festivals
in the Mediterranean. The city lives the life of the Mediterranean to the
full, leaving its impression on the open-air theatre. Apart from the tradition

N astajanje kazališne umjetnosti odigravalo se pod otvorenim ne-
bom Mediterana, u antičkoj Grčkoj. Tek dva tisućljeća kasnije, u
vrijeme renesanse, kazališna umjetnost napustit će svoje mjesto pod
zvijezdama i ući pod krov kazališne zgrade. Povratak u otvoreni pro-
stor Mediterana događa se tek sredinom dvadesetog stoljeća, na valu
optimizma koji je zahvatio Europu poratnih godina. Stari su kontinent
premrežili ljetni kazališni festivali, a početna inicijativa prerasla je ra-
zvojem turizma sljedećih desetljeća u masovni festivalski pokret koji je
širom Starog kontinenta europsko kazalište u najtoplije godišnje doba
preselio na otvoreno.

Theatres / Kazališta
I Hrvatska se svojom jakom kazališnom tradicijom, tih pedesetih godi-
na spremno priključila europskoj obitelji i pokrenula dva ljetna festivala.
Dubrovačke ljetne igre nastale su 1950., a četiri godine poslije započelo CROATIAN
je i Splitsko ljeto, tada kao Splitske ljetne priredbe. Oba će festivala NATIONAL
uspješno preživjeti do danas i izrasti u velike međunarodne festivale s THEATRE SPLIT

and the Meštrović Gallery, a memorial to
the world famous sculptor, was built in
1939 as a grand villa for the artist and his

his year marks two anniversaries in the life of Croatia’s most fa-
mous sculptor, Ivan Meštrović, who exhibited in prestigious galler-
ies in Paris, London, Vienna, and Rome, and created a rich body of
work of about three thousand sculptures. Eighty years ago (1939), the
construction of the present-day Meštrović Gallery in the Split neigh-
CROATIAN MARITIME bourhood of Meje was completed. It was designed as a grand villa
MUSEUM OF SPLIT for the sculptor and his family, to use as a summer residence, and an
HRVATSKI POMORSKI exhibition and workspace. The second anniversary is linked to one of
MUZEJ SPLIT Meštrović’s most famous works, a monument to the medieval bishop
Split, Glagoljaša 18, Gregory of Nin, which was erected on the Peristyle in Diocletian’s Pal-

with his masterpiece, the Well of Life. In spite of its success, it only

Meštrović was a supporter of aspirations of the time for the unifica-
tion of the South Slavic peoples and independence from the Austro-
Hungarian monarchy. He turned to the themes of national myths and
found expression in the form of monumental plasticity. With powerful

ve godine navršavaju se dvije obljetnice iz života najpoznatije- Palača Meštrović, blagovaonica
ga hrvatskog kipara Ivana Meštrovića koji je izlagao u najpre-
stižnijim galerijama Pariza, Londona, Beča i Rima, i stvorio bogat
opus s oko 3 tisuće skulptura. Prije 80 godina (1939.) dovršena je Mother and Child
gradnja današnje Galerije Meštrović na splitskom predjelu Meje koja Bogorodica s djetetom
je bila projektirana kao velebna vila za ljetni boravak kipara i njegove
obitelji, izlagački i radni prostor. Druga obljetnica vezana je uz jedno
od najpoznatijih Meštrovićevih djela, spomenik srednjovjekovnom
biskupu Grguru Ninskom koji je bio postavljen 1929. na Peristilu u
Dioklecijanovoj palači.
Meštrović je umjetničku karijeru započeo u ranim godinama XX
stoljeća, pridružio se Bečkoj secesiji 1905. godine kad je taj pokret
bio na vrhuncu popularnosti. Iduće godine vrlo zapaženo izlaže svo-
je remek djelo “Zdenac života”. Unatoč uspjehu, samo uvjetno je
pripadao secesiji: modelacijom slijedi impresionističkog kipara Rodi-
na, a i tematikom se također razlikuje. Naime, karakterističan je za
secesiju ambivalentan odnos između nagona života i smrti (erosa i
thanatosa). No, Zdenac bez zadrške slavi radosti koje život pruža
predstavljajući životni ciklus likovima koji se strasno ljube i grle.
Meštrovića uskoro obuzimaju tada aktualne težnje za ujedinjenjem
južnoslavenskih naroda i odvajanjem od Austro-ugarske monarhije.
Okreće se temama nacionalnih mitova i nalazi izraz u formi monu-
mentalne plastike. Snažnim muškim i ženskim volumenima ideali-
zira junaštvo i čežnju za slobodom Južnih Slavena. Tako nastaje
jedna od njegovih umjetnički najboljih faza “Vidovdanski ciklus” za
kojeg dobiva zlatnu medalju na međunarodnoj izložbi u Rimu 1911.
Nakon ujedinjenja južnih Slavena, razočaran u politiku i Kraljevinu
Jugoslaviju koja nije uspjela zadovoljiti želje naroda za ravnoprav-
nošću, Meštrović se okreće religioznim temama, motivima iz povije-
sti Hrvata, portretima te ženskim aktovima. Izričaji se kreću od ka-

u vrijeme okupacije Splita, a 1954. postavljen
je na sadašnju lokaciju ispred Zlatnih vrata
Dioklecijanove palače. Vjeruje se da dodirivanje
Grgurova palca ispunjava skrivene želje, pa su
ga brojne ruke uglancale do visokog sjaja.

Dika Marjanovic Radica published her “Dalmatian Cookbook” exactly
Trattoria Tinel 80 years ago. The first edition of about 270 recipes was published in 1939,

Dika Marjanović Radica svoju je «Dalmatinsku kuharicu» objavila pri- Split, Bajamontijeva 3
je točno 80 godina; prvo izdanje s oko 270 recepata objavljeno je 1939., 355 356

the 1930’s. Such travels, to regions that people rarely visited, were an
excellent foundation for her later cookbook, because she recorded reci-
pes everywhere she went. Long after the release of the first edition, she
continued to supplement it with ever-new recipes, until reaching almost

of the Second World War, she wrote a Practical Cookbook, with dishes
that could be made from virtually nothing, and yet had flavours reminis-
cent of the ‘real dishes’, such as cod without cod, rabbit without rabbit, or
Kod Joze meatless pâté. Today’s vegans would be delighted with such recipes, but
Dika’s motive was to overcome poverty.

W ith its rich history, the city of Split has always been a doorway to
Croatian culture, and theatrical art has played a special role in this.
In the creation of theatre performances, one cultural-artistic society has

samurai did not have for a long time, it became an inevitable part of theatrical
creations.
Our story of the unique Jedinstvo takes us back one hundred years
into the past. Shortly after the Great War, in 1919, the first Split-based
mixed choir was founded - the predecessor of today’s theatre choir,
Chang Asian which was the beginning of the Jedinstvo Folklore Society. After the end
food & Noodle bar of the Second World War, the folkloric section of the Jedinstvo Folklore
Society started working, and this cultural-artistic society became one of

opera, Ero the Joker. Apart from performing at theatrical performances,

G rad Split svojom je bogatom poviješću uvijek predstavljao vrata

kulture Hrvatske, a kazališna umjetnost u tome je imala posebnu
ulogu. Upravo u stvaranju kazališnih predstava jedno kulturno umjetnič-
ko društvo odigralo je presudnu ulogu. Naime, u nedostatku profesio-
nalnog baleta, koji Split dugo nije imao,ono je postajalo nezaobilaznim
dijelom kazališnih predstava.

Naša priča o jedinstvenom Jedinstvu vraća nas u prošlost punih stoti-
nu godina. Nedugo nakon Prvoga svjetskog rata 1919. godine osnovan
je prvi splitski mješoviti zbor – preteča današnjega kazališnog zbora koji
je zapravo početak rada KUD-a Jedinstvo. Nakon završetka Drugoga ACADEMIA CLUB
svjetskog rata započinje raditi i folklorna sekcija KUD-a Jedinstvo, pa GHETTO
ovo kulturno-umjetničko društvo postaje jedan od nositelja kulturnog ži- Dosud 10
