TYPE OF OPERATING SYSTEM (O.S) AND THEIR VARIOUS
MAT.NO:FUO/22/CSI/18908

FUNCTION OF OPERATING SYSTEM

Here is a list of some of the most prominent function of operating system
•Memory Management–Keeps track of the memory, i.e. what part of it is
in use by whom, what part is not inuse, etc. and allocates the memory
when a process or program requests it.
•Processor Management–Allocates the processor (CPU) to a process and
deallocates the processor when it is no longer required.
•Device Management –Keeps track of all he devices. This is also called I/O
controller that decides which process gets the device, when, and for how
muchtime.

whogetsthe resources.
•Security –Prevents unauthorized access to programs and data by means of
passwords and other similar techniques.
•Job Accounting–Keeps track of time and resources used by various jobs
and/or users.
•Control over system performance–Records delays betweenthe request
for a service and from the system.

•Interactionwith the Operators–Interaction may take place via the console

of the computer in the form of instructions. The Operating System
acknowledges the same, does the corresponding action, and informsthe
operation by a display screen.
•Error-detecting Aids–Production of dumps, traces error messages, and
other debuggingand error-detecting methods.
•Coordination Between Other Software and Users–Coordination and
assignment of compilers, interpreters, assemblers, and other software to the
various users of the computer systems.

TYPE OF OPERATING SYSTEM AND THEIR VARIOUS VERSIONS

1.Microsoft Windows
2.Mac OS X
3.Linux
4.Android
5.IOS
6.Windows Mobile

•Microsoft Windows–Microsoft created the windows operating system in

the mid-1980s. Over the years, there have been many different versions of
windows, but some of the most recent ones are windows10, windows 8,
(released in 2012), windows 7, (2009), and Windows Vista (2007). Windows
comes preloaded on most new PCs, Which helps to make it the most
popular Operating system in the world As of October 2018, the most recent
version of Windows for PCs, Tablets, Smartphones and embedded devices
is Windows 10. The most recent version for server computer is Window
Server 2019. A specialized version of Windows runs on the Xbox One video

servers, According to StateCounter Global Stats, Mac OS X
users account for 9.5% of the Operating Systems market as of September
2014-much lower than the percentage of windows users (almost90%). One
reason for this is that Apple computers tend to be more expensive.
However, many people prefer the look and feelof MacOS X.

versions-you can choose from. Each distribution has a different look and
feel, and the most popular ones include Ubuntu, Mint, and Fedora. Linux is
named after Linus Torvalds, who created the Linux Kernel in 1991. The
kernel is the computercode that is the central part of an operating system.
According to StatCounter Global Stats, Linux users account for less than
2% of the operating systems market as of September 2014. However, most
servers run Linux because it’s relatively easy to customize.
