Assessment Task Notification

Year: 11

Course: Biology

Due Date: Term 1 Week 10

Task Number: 1

Nature: Depth Study-Factors affecting the rate of photosynthesis or respiration

Content Area: Cells as the Basis of Life-Module 1

Weighting: 40%

Outcomes to be assessed:
BIO11/12-1 develops and evaluates questions and hypotheses for scientific investigation
BIO11/12-2 designs and evaluates investigations in order to obtain primary and secondary
data and information
BIO11/12-3 3 conducts investigations to collect valid and reliable primary and secondary
data and information
BIO11/12-4 selects and processes appropriate qualitative and quantitative data and
information using a range of appropriate media
BIO11/12-5 analyses and evaluates primary and secondary data and information
BIO11/12-7 communicates scientific understanding using suitable language and
terminology for a specific audience or purpose
BIO11-8 describes single cells as the basis for all life by analysing and explaining cells’
ultrastructure and biochemical processes

Note the School's Policy is:

If a student is absent on the day of an assessment task

➢ An illness or misadventure form must be lodged with the Curriculum Coordinator

concerned the next day that the student is in attendance at the school.
➢ A doctor's certificate may be required if the application is on medical grounds.
➢ If you hand in any assessment task late (and you have not handed in with it an
illness/misadventure form for consideration) 10% of the available maximum mark will be
deducted per day late.

Assessment Outline:

• You are to plan and conduct an investigation to determine the effect of a chosen factor
on the rate of either photosynthesis or respiration. You are to communicate your investigation through
PowerPoint Video.
• You will need to communicate the aim of your investigation to your teacher as soon as possible so you
may receive appropriate feedback and assistance. Class time will be allocated for you to complete your
investigation.

• Follow the following criteria:

- Introduction/ background information

- Initial Hypothesis and Preliminary Trials
- Final Hypothesis
- Final Method
- Results
- Discussion
- Conclusion
- PowerPoint/ Video Presentation
- Reference list

• You need to design, plan and perform the investigation individually.

• Read the marking criteria carefully to assist you in your investigation.
• Your presentation should be 7 to 10 minutes.

• Important Due Dates:

1. Question to be investigated by the group is due as soon as possible.

2. You will get time during class in Week 9 to perform the experiment and collect data if your
question cannot be investigated at home.
3. Presentations are strictly due in Week 10.

Please refer to marking criteria for more guidance
