WATER
SAFETY
BY: MUAZ BAIHAQI
WATER SAFETY is designed to equip students
with knowledge and understanding to handle
water-related activities in a safe manner. The
course focuses on health condition, hazard
prevention, recognition and response in the
aquatic environment. This course also provides
students with techniques and skills to maintain
good health condition, basic aquatic skills and
hydrodynamic.

SYNOPSIS
Chapter 1: Water attraction and
Hazards
IN THIS TOPIC STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO :
1.1 Explain water attraction
I. The importance of water safety education

II. Natural and man-made water body

III. Types of water activities

1.2 Explain water hazards

I. Types of water hazards

II. The effect from overexposure in water activities

III. Safety measures from water hazards

Importance of Water Safety
Education
 To enable an individual to recognise and asses potential aquatic dangers
and to develop a realistic understanding of their swimming in various water
and weather conditions.
It is primarily concerned with the prevention of drowning and avoid life –
threatening situations.
Natural and man-made water
bodies
1. Natural Water Body
2. Man-made Water body

Types of water activities
1. Swimming
2. Snorkeling
3. Scuba Diving
Swimming
Swimming is an individual or team sport
that involves using arms and legs to move
the body through water. Typically,
swimming takes place in pools or in open
water (e.g., in a sea or lake). Swimming is
a sport that tests your fitness and
stamina.
Snorkeling

Snorkeling is swimming on the surface or

through water with a diving mask, fins, and a
hollow tube called a snorkel (a pipe that helps
you breathe underwater).
Scuba Diving

People have been longing to discover what lies

deep beneath the sea. Scuba diving makes this
possible by allowing people to swim underwater
without needing to hold one’s breath. The diver
uses a self-contained underwater breathing
apparatus (scuba) which is completely independent
of surface supply, to breathe underwater.
Effects from Overexposure in
Water Activities
1. Exposure to Ultraviolet Radiation (UV rays) and Health Effects

2. Hypothermia – Lungs and brain loses heat.

3. Injury

4. Poisoning

5. Infection
Water Hazards
Types of Water Hazards
1. Very cold temperature –
Will causes hypothermia
(body core temperature
falls)
Safety measures from water
hazards.
1. Never swim alone - Swimming should only happen when a lifeguard is on duty

2. Enter the Water Feet First – Reduce potential of injury/to check depth of water

3. Stay Within Designated Swim Areas - Whether you're swimming in a pool, ocean or lake, staying
within the designated swim areas is vital to staying safe.

4. Apply sunblock (50SPF)– Sunblock prevents/filter UV radiation from damaging our skin/Skin
cancer

5. Wear safety vest – Safety vest must be always worn.
