Introduction to Vedic Chanting

for children (8 to 13 years)

Overview
The vedas, known as sruti, were heard by great masters called Rsi-s who had the ability to connect to
the vibrations of the universe and express them through mantra-s. The timeless wisdom thus
revealed itself through the mantra-s. This knowledge was passed on further by means of oral
recitations and chanting. Such a tradition is often considered among the oldest, unbroken oral
traditions in existence.

Through this 12 week course the students learn the basics of chanting, the technique and the chants,
in the tradition of Sri.T.Krishnamacharya and Sri T.K.V Desikachar. They will learn the same through
experiencing chanting as a self-reflective, self-exploratory process in a safe and engaging
environment. We have developed a pedagogical process of teaching chanting that takes into
consideration the changes that are happening during these early adolescent years at multiple levels
(physical, physiological and emotional). This process of learning chanting will stand them in good
stead, leading them towards an inner anchorage as they journey through their adolescent years.

What will children learn?

● Basic concepts of chanting which include pronunciation, intonation, rhythm, and flow
● Simple introductory chants such as maheshwara sutra, ayur mantra and pancamaya
shloka, Gayatri mantra etc
● Connect to the ideas and meanings of the chants
● Learning to work together in a group, holding oneself and the others simultaneously

How will these sessions help?

Children have a varied experience during their time with us. Some children who are initially
silent without sharing much about themselves, usually start having meaningful conversations by
the end of the session. Some who talk a whole lot slow down to listen to others. Some who are
not confident begin to discover a gift or two about themself that they can share. Some find their
voice to assert, some learn to be compassionate. All of us discover beautiful stories and
awareness about ourselves and our worlds. We invite you to be open to observe and notice the
changes that unfold with your child.

The paradox is that we touch a world beyond words within ourselves through a process of
dealing with words, their clear pronunciation, intonation, their tonal ups and downs, the measure
and strength of delivery, clarity of communication, and a melodic sense of continuity and
wholesomeness in the thread of words - all of which form the basics of vedic chanting.

Chanting will also help the students to-:

● Connect to the tradition and knowledge of the vedas
● Improve listening and communication skills
● Improve concentration and memory
● Strengthen breathing capacity
