1.0 CHAPTER ONE
1.1 Introduction;

History and Government as a subject in the Kenyan Education system is facing a lot of
challenges. People are much concerned with the current issues and greatly interested on the
future lives besides knowing the great portion of our future endeavors are determined by our past
experience. This therefore clearly shows that history as a subject should be extensively taught to
the students since it creates awareness to the individuals on their past life experiences, attitudes
and values that prepares one to be a qualified public leader. The study of history also enables one
to have a sense of belonging in his/her community based on his/her own culture.

History and Government is categorized as a humanity subject at the secondary school level and
as an optional subject as from form three otherwise compulsory in forms one and two. The
teaching and learning resources of the subject should enable teachers to make lucrative use of
more abstract instructional activities in order to build clear, vivid and concrete experiences so as
to give the learners a meaningful abstract presentation of reality of the past and even of the
present. It is relevant to use a flip chart of “THE PEOPLES OF KENYA” to illustrate abstract
concepts in History and Government.

The flip chart of “THE PEOPLES OF KENYA” will therefore be utilized in facilitating effective
teaching and learning for fundamental concept within the topic “The Peoples of Kenya” in form
one. Its use will enhance the learner’s understanding of all concepts about the “The Peoples of
Kenya”.
1.2 BACKGROUND INFORMATION;
The model of early means of communication is mainly for the purpose of teaching in Mosisa
Mixed Secondary School.
The school started in 1995 to cater for local demand for secondary school education. The
institution produced its first KCSE graduates in 1998, the year it received it's first T.S.C.
teachers. The school grew rapidly and in 2002 it was registered as a double stream. Currently the
school enrollments stand at 417; 225 boys and 192 girls.
The school has a requisite infrastructure of ten classrooms, two laboratories, one library,
departmental offices, a staffroom and an administration office.
The school is managed by a Board of Management (B.O.M) duly appointed by the Ministry of
Education on a three year tenure basis. It has an active PTA (Parents Teachers Association) that
has struggled to put up the basic facilities. The school gets support from the local political
leadership i.e. funding through the constituency development fund (C.D.F).

Performance of the school; For the last five years, the school has allowed candidates to sit for
an examination and the school has had a mean score of the following;

YEAR MEAN SCORE

2019 3.814
2020 3.364
2021 4.349
2022 6.7561
2023 3.820
Table 1.0 School academic performance history

Based on the above history, the school has been improving over the four years though there was
an increase in the 2022 KCSE. The school has now set up some strategies in order to deal with
the negative deviation that was encountered in the previous year, such strategies includes;
Introduction of morning and evening lessons in order to cover the syllabus on time, math speed
test to be given to students every day during lunch hour.
Though Mosisa mixed secondary school does not have a big land it still maximize the available
resource to promote the development of talents. The students are involved in sports such as
football and athletics. The school is looking forward to having a big land to accommodate all
games.

School location; Mosisa Mixed Secondary School is a public mixed day secondary school
situated two kilometers from Nyamasibi market center. Its located in Masimba ward in Kisii
County.
1.3 Project Identification;

Upon joining Mosisa Mixed secondary school on 13thMay 2024, I found an urgent need to have a
sound background particularly as the teaching of History and Government is concerned. This is
because the background information will help me identify the critical aspects in teaching History
and Government and identifying the teaching and learning resources that can enhance the
understanding of the concepts in History and Government.

I discovered that the teaching and learning resources available in the school are meant for other
subjects of which History and Government is excluded. As a matter of fact, the teaching of
History and Government can also be encouraged among the students by developing some
appealing and some concrete teaching and learning resource.

From the information I gathered from the learners, I reconsidered making a flip chart of the
Peoples of Kenya depicting how their migration routes and areas of settlement in Kenya up to the
19thcentury.

1.4 Project Justification;

The topic ‘The Peoples of Kenya’ in History and Government in form one is partly abstract for
learners to understand unless clearly illustrated using a flip chart of the Peoples of Kenya to
bring into reality and concretize the concept which is quite often present orally. The project in its
stage of completion will show a clear picture of the migration and settlement of the Peoples of
Kenya.

This project is of choice for the following reasons;

1. The topic is very relevant

2. The materials for the project are readily available and relatively cheap
3. This project once completed will be maintained in the freely implying that it will require
no funds whatsoever to maintain.
4. Can be used for revision especially with the candidate class for KCSE preparation.
5. Can be used to supplement the teaching of other subjects such as English and Literature.
2.0 CHAPTER TWO

2.1 Project Relevance;

The flip chart of the Peoples of Kenya will aid in teaching History and Government in Mosisa
Mixed Secondary School as a teaching aid.

It is easier to understand as learners can easily use the model for revision without the
intervention of the teacher. It brings a realistic view or rather a situation in the mind of the
learners so that they can understand the topic “The Peoples of Kenya up to the 19th Century” with
ease. Learning is more effective when the learners are given the opportunities to interact and
manipulate the learning objects.

This flip chart will therefore provide the learners with an opportunity to manipulate the learning
materials in History and Government.

2.2 Project Design;

The project is to be carried on a maximum period of 10 weeks. The project will be done with the
collaboration of the teacher and the learners. Due to the challenges faced by learners, the project
is of stood benefit in the solving problems in understanding the Peoples of Kenya.

The project will involve the coming up of charts with sketches and photographs showing the
Peoples of Kenya It requires the following;

i) Manila papers.
ii) Office glue.
iii) Marker pens.
iv) Photographs.
v) Masking tape.
2.3 Project Objectives;

The aim of 8-4-4 system is to adopt practical approach to institutions which takes in account the
learner’s participation. Upon successful completion of the project, it is aimed at achieving the
following objectives which will greatly improve the teaching and learning of History and
Government;

1. To create interest in learners during the learning of History and Government

2. Enabling learners to concretize abstract concepts in the topic ‘The Peoples of Kenya up to
the 19th Century’ because it will give them an opportunity to be actively involved in the
learning process
3. Making the teaching and learning of the subject practical and give the learners an
opportunity to manipulate physical learning materials
4. To break monotony of the classroom learning and give both the teacher and the learners an
opportunity to practically participate in situational experience
5. The project will enhance the reduction of instructional time since it will make the
understanding of difficult and abstract concepts in history and government easy since the
learners are directly involved
6. The project also aims at developing willingness to work collaboratively in group discussion
through observation and manipulation of the learning objects.

2.4 PROJECT PROCEDURE;

The process of constructing the modal will be done as follows;

1. Collection of the project materials

2. Making sketches on the manila papers
3. Mounting the photographs on the manila papers using office glue
4. Sealing the edges of the manila papers with the masking tape
5. Binding the manila papers in order to make the flip chart
3.0 CHAPTER THREE

3.1 Utilization of the project;

The project is intended to cover the topic ‘The Peoples of Kenya up to the 19th Century’. The
relevant aspects of the topic to be taught and learnt using the teaching aid include;
a). The major groups and sub-groups of the peoples of Kenya.
b). The reasons for migration into Kenya
c). The ways of interaction during their migration and settlement.

By utilizing the project for instruction in the topic of coverage, the learner will be able to;
i) List the communities that belong to the Eastern Cushites.
ii) State the results of the Luo migration into Kenya.

3.2 Calendar of Events;

The project will be conducted by allocating each specific time duration and implementers.
