HRV1601: Assessment 3
1. Introduction
Economic inequality and gender-based violence are pervasive issues that significantly
impede access to education, particularly in Hillermann Bros Farm in Wartburg under
Umshwathi. The conversion of the three challenges escalate the inequalities and fuelling
cycles of poverty and social injustice. This assessment is based on a major issues of the
complex relationships between economic inequality, gender-based violence, and limited
education. Through researching and the effects of these issues, this study aims to
contribute to a nuanced understanding of the challenges facing the community of
Hillermann Bros.
2.
Religiously the farm is divided in between a group of believers and unbelievers. But, the
domineering religion is Christianity. And the least is the “African Spirituality”. We believe
and worship God and we believe that one day he will be return one day to claim his pride.
There are two different churches in my area for Christianity which are the Pella Perish
Lutheran Church and the Ethiopian Zion Christian Church where black people worship. The
Pella attendees practice on Sundays only unless stated otherwise in their church calendar
and in holidays such as Christmas and Easter. The Zion goers attend on Sundays and take
prayer to community members on Wednesdays during the week. Then there is the other
Lutheran Church in the town area in Wartburg where white men and woman worship we
never know of their practices. The Zion Church has a sacred dam in the area where they
practice their such as baptism. The other population on African spirituality take taxis on
Saturdays to worship in their temple which is under the trees with painted white rocks.
The main space at the farmstead is the African group, we are the majority. The fewer
individuals are the whites . We have got different types of backgrounds which includes
which involves the amaZulu and Basotho. On the white ethnicity we have the Germans,
Boers and Englishman. At some point we black feel segregated and inferior towards the
whites because we are separated in many things such as work, church, even the behaviour
they have towards us, and lastly when they give us lifts we are not supposed to sit in the
front but to climb at the back of the car. However, the white do not welcome the white
strangers when they are of the other colour until they hear the reason of their stay for
instance, when they are job hunting they prefer foreigners because they do not have to pay
them much salary as they complain that my people are very conscious about their pay. In
public areas we become this one mixed group consisting of Zulu and Sotho. But, not with
the white race we only interact with them in the stores. Everybody express their culture
through music for instance we Zulus play Maskandi and we dance (ukusina), Basotho play
their own origin music, also the Boer play Afrikaner musik while doing braai.
My Community is a low income space because most of the people are no longer working
because of retrenchment during pandemic, some are having difficulty in meeting our basic
needs. With the states help we get assistance and sometimes it does not reach the people
who really need it because of favouritism. The land owners are the whites and they give my
people jobs to work in the farmlands of sugarcane, the pine trees forest and domestic
work. The area is quite green and they built their own dams. People in my community live in
houses built by the land owners known as workers compound. The majority did not finish
school and in those who did their parents could not afford to pay tuition fees therefore were
forced to seek for jobs in this very own farm. Resources such as health are excessive
although we have to travel long distances to access the public clinic because we can not
afford the private doctor near. Also, for education the land owners built a primary school for
us so that we can learn even though some did not continue to high school. We do not have
a park for leisure but we have just a small ground opened by boys in my neighbourhood to
play soccer. We have Mr Hillermann’s son shop for groceries and also the Spar market is
also a few metres away we just have to travel a distance. Lastly, there are no taverns or bars
people have to but their beverages in the small town and come back home to enjoy.
3.
One of the dominating problem is the economic inequality and poverty. People in
Hillermann Bros is divided. The white has sustainable jobs as they are working in the
management department. They earn high income and they are able to afford their
necessities such as such as being able to access private hospitals and private doctors.
Their Children attend private schools with high school fees. They drive different cars and
they own a variety of them. They are also able to take their children to private institutions
where they pay for higher education in private institution. Their houses are in an excellent
state and very far from us they are very private. On the other hand the black race works in
the low income paying jobs such as the Gardening, Domestic work as well as sugarcane
plantations . We are unable to reach some necessary needs. We do not have closer health
care facilities, we have take taxis to travel and some cannot afford the taxi fare but they
walk to public clinics. We only have one primary closer, while the high schools are far away
therefore pupils have to walk by foot to access education. Also , only three houses consist
of cars. There are very limited job opportunities for the youth is unemployed and those
who have jobs are in these plantations and it is very low paying. We also live in the
workers compound , they are inadequate in a way that they leak when there is a heavy
rainfall they leak. The Umshwathi municipality (2022), declared that by 2027 that 28 747
households are without piped water. This means that these households help themselves
with unclean water. The constitution (South Africa 1996: Chapter 2, 27(1), outlined that
every person has rights to health care services. Also Section 27 (b), emphasized that every
person has a right to nutritious food and sufficient water. Consequently human rights are
being violated in these conditions.
Another challenge is the violence against women and gender inequality rife in Hillermann
farm. Different violations and inequalities strike Hillermann Farm. Numerous types of
violence face women because of their gender. Mostly the perpetrators are men in crimes
such as rape, physical harm or torture and murder. Most couples in my neighbourhood are
living together. That creates multiple chances for women being violated by their partners
because they feel entitled and powerful over their partners. This is in different forms such
as being forced into sexual intercourse, pregnancy. They are also being beaten up badly in
the name of love resulting to murder.
Violence is also a problem to Lesbians in a way that they get killed and raped to “prove that
they are not men”. Most women in this farmland are either working low income paying jobs
or are unemployed . This causes them to be financially dependant on their spouses.
Therefore, even if they are subjected to violence they do not find the courage to leave .
Married women are living under the oppression that whatever her husband wants she must
obey even if he does not want her to finish or go to higher institutions or even work on the
fields to contribute. After paying his dowry he has a say in her life and she must obey. There
is not enough support for abused women in my community not even the police complete
their job when it comes to women abuse. (South Africa 1996:Chapter 2, 9) , clarifies that
everybody has the right to life. (South Africa 1996: Chapter 2, 9(3), outlines that the nation
should not disadvantage an individual directly or indirectly according race, gender, sex,
pregnancy, ethnic, or social origin , sexual orientation, religion , belief, culture. (South
Africa 1996: Chapter 2, 12), declared that every person has a right of freedom and
protection , including being free from every type of violence anywhere public or private.
Therefore, people are being violated of their rights.
Lastly, Access to quality education is divided between the whites and blacks . Blacks only
have one primary school and since our population is not that large it is only one block and
different classes share classrooms. The teachers are not enough in our primary there are
only 4 teachers and each one teaches 4 subjects per day. Also, not all the teachers are well
trained some do not even have the qualification for education. Books and other resources
are very small in quantity therefore children have to share. High school pupils have to walk
a long distance to reach the school in our local town to obtain their education.
Only two children from our neighbourhood has reached higher education in government
institutions while most of the youth are high school dropouts. Resulting to more poverty
and poor literature in Hillermann Bros. While the white group’s children attend in boarding
schools and have money for college. They are exposed to variety of opportunities even to
study abroad. Their schools provide children with functions such as sports, arts and drama
to keep the excellence of their pupils. (South Africa 1996: Chapter 2, 29(1)-9) Declares that
children and adults have rights to access to basic education. Moreover, the human rights
of education for pupils are violated .
4.
Economic inequality
The reason contributing to the economic problem is the colonisation and the distribution of
Native lands during the apartheid regime. The area in my neighbourhood belonged to King
Gcumisa of Kwa Swayimani where he was ruling with monarchy. The colonizers (The Dutch
we call them Boers) came and forcefully took the place and made people work for them,
the Hillermann ancestors started from forcing our ancestors to hard labour in sugarcane
plantations and forestry with minimum payments resulting their triumph. They also forced
our grandparents to learn Afrikaans in consequently most of them never finished instead
they dropped out in primary level. Even today the Land is still owned by them.
People used to practice education through oral practices and they taught African traditions
and histories. According to Journals.co.za , these teachings were banned by the colonizers.
Inequality also perpetuated in apartheid regime when the Bantu education was introduced.
Bauer (2024), outlines that this system came effective in 1954. Black South Africans where
obliged to study in public schools. These schools provided an inferior curriculum. They
were trained for manual jobs with low income. Because the minority believed it is what they
deserved because of their skin colour. Also the use of Afrikaans caused members to drop
out of school at early age.
Structural inputs
Economic inequality
Income is not equal between households because of a very huge difference between land
owners and workers because while the rich ones get richer the poor people gets poorer.
The uneven allocation of land owners in Hillermann consequently resulted to the wealth
and strength to the white side of the group. While the dark race group are lacking resources
and basic needs. Political factor is through the contracts of service deliveries are limited .
Gender inequality
Financial hardship and low wages contribute into not being able to take their children to
better schools. Lack of Funding in this school contribute to it not having enough resources.
Some of households here are child headed who were forced to drop out of school to
provide for their siblings. The government funding does not reach those who really need it
because of budget and corruption. The white group inherits from generation to generation
enabling them to attend private institutions. Whilst the black generation cannot have the
same access because of lack of back up and support.
5.
The artificial intelligence outlined issues such as gender based violence and gender
inequality, Economic inequality and poverty and Access to quality education . Yes I Agree,
that these issues found by Co-pilot are in my community these essay will elaborate on the
issues.
The Co-pilot mentioned the access to education as a troubling issue. In a form of limited
access to education which causes squabbles change of social status. The co-pilot outlined
limited resources, infrastructure in a bad state . The School Hive (2024), emphasizes that
our local school Pella Primary School consists of only 4 teachers. Personally experienced
for 8 years. We used to share books, the were only 4 teachers and were overwhelmed with
lot of work. Therefore I agree with the co-pilot that this issue is rife at Hillemann
Conclusively, I agree with the Co-pilot that challenges like Gender based violence, unequal
economy and poverty and Access to quality education that my community is struggling with.
6.
The neighbourhood has established a night schools for adults and youth who never got
their chance, who dropped out of school during the early days referred to as Abet.
Our community teacher Mr Zondi is the helper by tutoring in the programme. He teaches
and prepares old people before their examinations. He and other community members
gather around at our local school permitted by Mr Gcwabaza the principal to use and
conduct their tutorials. This programme helps decrease the illiteracy because the learners
get exposed to Mathematics, English and other skills. Most importantly , the elders obtain
certificates through these programmes. This means that they a chance to further their
studies and better their lives. These programmes are partnered with government and
especially aimed at low income earners and the unemployed.
7.
Conclusion
Beyond the shadow of a doubt , problems of economic inequality, gender based violence
and access to education are suppressing my community effectively. As a divided race of a
rural area in farm lands . We encounter these issues in many ways as high poverty rate,
limited resources resulting to squabbles in community progress.

I founded the tool useful, because I gave me like a proper structure and what is expected
from me to portray in the assessment, It simplified and clarified the questions and also
gave me a direction.
I Ensured through making a straight forward tone, and paraphrasing and mostly writing in
my own understanding
Yes, because most of the time it did no go against the context . It acted like a map or google
to help me with research.
