Worksheet-4: Pressure and Force

POINTS TO REMEMBER:
1. Only unbalanced forces create motion
2. Pressure depends only on
 Depth
 Acceleration due to gravity and
 Density of the liquid
3. 1 atm is 1.013*105
4. One bar= 105 pascal
5. CGS unit of pressure is Barye

Derivation of Equations of motion

I) We know that
Acceleration= ( Final velocity−initial velocity ¿ /time
That is a= ( v−u ¿/t
v-u= a*t
V= u+at
u = initial velocty
V= final Velocity
t= time taken

Practice probem with first equation of motion:

1. A Body at rest was accelerated, and it traveled for 5 minutes. The constant acceleration
provided to the body was 2 m/sec2. Find the final velocity the object had before coming
to a stop.
2. A body is moving with an initial velocity of 2 m/s and acceleration of −0.5m/s2. Find the
time when the velocity of the particle becomes zero.
3. A Car with an initial speed of 1 m/sec was in motion for 10 minutes, and then it came to
a stop, the velocity right before it stopped was 5 m/sec. What was the constant
acceleration of the car?
Second equation of motion
Let the initial velocity of the object be u, acceleration of the object be a, and the
displacement covered by the object be S, the second equation will be,
S = ut + (at2)/2
Practice probem with second equation of motion:
4. If initial velocity of a particle is 2 m/s and it travels 10 m in 1 s then what will be its
acceleration?
5. A ball is dropped from a certain height. It took the ball 15 seconds to reach the ground. What is
the height at which the ball was initially? [Take g=10m/sec2]
Hint: Ball is dropped so the initial velocity is zero
6. A cycle covered 2 km in 8 minutes and the initial velocity of the cycle was 1 m/sec. Find the
acceleration that the cycle had in its motion?

Third equation of motion,

v2= u2+ 2aS
7. Find the final velocity of an object that travelled a distance of 500meter with an initial
speed of 2m/sec and acceleration of the object was 0.5m/sec2?
8. A toy is accidentally dropped by a kid from his roof. The final velocity of the toy before
it reached the ground was 8m/sec. Find the height of the building?
More formulas to remember
 F=mass times acceleration= m*a
 Momentum= mass times velocity= m*v
 Gain in momentum of change in momentum=(m*final velocity- m* initial velocity)= mv-
mu
 Force= Change in momentum with time= (mv-mu)/t
 Acceleration produced by a force=Force/mass
 Buoyant force= mass of water displaced*acceleration due to gravity
Mass of water displaced= Volume of the water displaced* density of water displaced
(mass= volume* density)
(remember that the volume of water displaced is equal to Volume of the immersed object )
Buoyant force= mass of water displaced*acceleration due to gravity
Buoyant force= Volume of water displaced* density of water* acceleration due to
gravity(Volume of water displaced will be equal to volume of the immersed object)
 Apparent weight of body when dipped in liquid= true weight- buoyant force that acts on
opposite side
Apparent weight= m*g - mass of water displaced*g
Or
Apparent weight= m*g – volume of water displaced* density of water*g
= mg-Vdisplaced*Density*g
 Acceleration produced when two blocks are in contact and force is applied
acceleration=F/(m1+m2)
Problem
9. Two blocks are in contact on a frictionless table. One has mass m and the other 2m a
force 10N is applied on 2m as shown in the figure What is the acceleration produced in
this below system?

Solution:
Blocks will move together with both of them being in contact with one another
acceleration=F/(m1+m2)
a=10/(2m+m)
a=10/3m
 Contact force:
A contact force is any force that occurs as a result of two objects making contact with
each other.

In this above case, force is acting on the block that weights 2m, that 2m block will come
into contact with block of mass m, The second block of mass m will exert a contact force
that is equal to mass of the second block times the acceleration
Contact force= m*acceleration

In this above case, force is acting on the block that weights m, that m block will come
into contact with block of mass 2m, The second block of mass 2m will exert a contact
force that is equal to mass of the second block times the acceleration
Contact force= 2m* acceleratio

10.

Two blocks are in contact on a frictionless table. One has mass m and the other 2m a
force 10N is applied on 2m as shown in the figure What is the acceleration produced in
this above system and what is the contact force?
acceleration=F/(m1+m2)
a=10/(2m+m)
a=10/3m
Contact force= mass of the second block times acceleration
= m*(10/3m)
= 10/3
11.

Two blocks are in contact on a frictionless table. One has mass m and the other 2m a
force 10N is applied on 2m as shown in the figure What is the acceleration produced in
this above system and what is the contact force?
acceleration=F/(m1+m2)
a=10/(2m+m)
a=10/3m
Contact force= mass of the second block times acceleration
= 2m*(10/3m)
= 20/3
