Gardening for a healthier future

Eating healthy food, especially fresh vegetables, is one way of improving people’s

general health, but buying vegetables in shops can be expensive. Organisations such

as the Woolworths Trust Eduplant programme provide support to schools that want to

start their own vegetable gardens.

The Eduplant programme encourages permaculture, which is a system of natural,

balanced gardening and farming with an emphasis on recycling waste and protecting

the environment.

Alwin Kgopa, a teacher at Toronto Primary School in Makweng, Limpopo is a key

example of the programme’s success. In 2001, Kgopa entered the school’s garden

project into Eduplant and came second in the Emerging catergory. Eight years later

he won many awards for the school’s garden. More importantly, Kgopa has formed a

group of 15 other local schools to encourage them to develop permaculture food

production.
