Materials:
4 pcs nails
2 recyclable glass jars with cover
Salt and sandpaper
What To Do
1 Clean the nail and jars with sandpaper then wash them with
warm water.
2 Label the jars A and B. Fill jar B with water and teaspoon full of
salt.
3 Put two nails in each jar. Cover jar A tightly and leave jar B
uncover.
4 Place the jars outside where there is enough air two days.
5 observe what happens to the nails in both jars. Do not open jar A
yet.
Guide Questions:
1. What did you observe with the nails in jar A? jar B?
2. What new materials was formed in the nails in the jar B?
3. What substance in jar B speeds up the formation of rust?
4. What substance in the air is needed to combine with iron in the nail
and from rust?
INPUT OF TEACHER
Oxygen is a part of the air that surrounds us. It can cause
changes on different materials. Some fruits, root crops and
vegetables have enzymes which when are cut, oxygen is
introduced into their cells and enzymes rapidly oxidize their
tissue and turn it into brown.
Another effect of oxygen is rusting. It is caused by the
reaction of iron with oxygen present in the air. The amount
of rust formed in an iron depends on the moisture and
humidity of the surrounding.
Oxygen causes changes on different materials. Combustion
