BUILDING SCIENCE (STRUCTURES) 1 – KBS112_KBSV102

Time: 2hrs Test No 2- 21st October 2022 TOTAL (60)

Use the grid paper provided on the next pages, fill in your name and student number on
the top of the page in the spaces provided and hand these papers in with your answer
script.

1. Refer to beam 1 on the next pages. Determine the following,

a. Calculate all resultants and reactions ‘C’ and ‘D’. (3)

b. Draw the Shear Force diagram (SFD), clearly showing the shear force’s values and
shape. Make sure that the SFD relates to the loading. Mark a zero value with an X or 0
to show that you have not forgotten it. (7)

c. Draw the Bending Moment Diagram (BMD), showing the values of the bending moment
and its shape clearly (if it is a curve (parabolic shape), note that on the diagram). Make
sure that the BMD relates to the SFD. Mark a zero value with an X or 0 to show that
you have not forgotten it (7)

d. Draw the Deflective Shape Diagram (DFS) qualitatively. Make sure that the DFS
relates to the BMD. (3)

e. Indicate the position of the bending steel reinforcement in the longitudinal section at the
bottom of Figure 1. (3)

2. Refer to beam 2 on the next pages. Determine the following,

a. Calculate all resultants and reactions ‘B’ and ‘F’. (5)

b. Draw the Shear Force diagram (SFD), clearly showing the shear force's values and
shape. Make sure that the SFD relates to the loading. Mark a zero value with an X or 0
to show that you have not forgotten it. (13)

c. Draw the Bending Moment Diagram (BMD), showing the values of the bending moment
and its shape clearly (if it is a curve (parabolic shape), note that on the diagram). Make
sure that the BMD relates to the SFD. Mark a zero value with an X or 0 to show that
you have not forgotten it (13)

d. Draw the Deflective Shape Diagram (DFS) qualitatively. Make sure that the DFS
relates to the BMD. (3)

e. Indicate the position of the bending steel reinforcement in the longitudinal section at the
bottom of Figure 2. (3)
