Semester 1, 2024 The University of Newcastle

Week 3 Workshop 2

1. The parametric equation of the line passing through two points P0 = (x0 , y0 , z0 ) and P1 =
(x1 , y1 , z1 ) is

x = x0 + t(x1 − x0 ),
y = y0 + t(y1 − y0 ),
z = z0 + t(z1 − z0 ), t ∈ R.

The Cartesian equation of the plane through point P0 = (x0 , y0 , z0 ) and perpendicular to the
vector n = ha, b, ci is
a(x − x0 ) + b(y − y0 ) + c(z − z0 ) = 0.

(a) Find the parametric equation of the line through (1, 0, 1) and (4, −2, 2).

(b) Find the equation of the plane through the point (0, 0, 6) that has the normal vector
h1, 1, 1i.

(c) Where does the line of part (a) intersect the plane of part (b)?

2. Consider the parametric curve defined by x(s) = 2 cos s, y(s) = 3 sin s and z(s) = 2π − s.

(a) Find the tangent vector to the parametric curve r(s) = hx(s), y(s), z(s)i.

(b) Find the equation of the tangent line to the curve at the point (0, −3, π/2).

3. The parametric equation for a surface is given by

r = hs cos t, s sin t, s + 1i

(a) Find the normal vector at P0 = (0, 1, 2).

(b) Using the normal vector you have computed in part (a), find the tangent plane to the level
surface given by r at P0 = (0, 1, 2).

4. A tank of capacity 1000 litres contains 500 litres of pure water. Salt solution containing
2mg/litre salt enters the tank at 20 litres/s and the (stirred) mixture flows out at 10 litres/s.

1. When will the tank start to overflow?

2. Write down an initial value problem for the amount of salt in the tank before it overflows.

3. How much salt is in the tank when it starts to overflow?

5. Suppose a student carrying a contagious virus returns to an isolated1 university campus of

1000 students and starts infecting other students. Assume the rate of infection is proportional
to the number of infected students2. After four days there are already 50 students infected.
How many will be infected after 6 days?

END OF PAPER
1
Mathematically speaking, no-one except the one infected student enters or leaves the campus.
For modelling purposes, do work with continous student numbers, so that a differential equation model is appropriate.
2
appropriate.
