Q.29 Coordination compounds are widely present in the minerals, plant and 4
animal world and are known to play many important functions in the area of
analytical chemistry, metallurgy and biological systems and medicine.
Alfred werner’s theory postulated the use of two types of linkage (Primary
and secondary) by a metal atom/ion in a coordination compound. He
predicted the geometrical shapes of a large number of coordination entities
using the property of isomerism.
The Valance bond theory (VBT) explain the formation magnetic behavior and
geometrical shapes of coordination compounds. If, however, fails to
describe the optical properties of these compounds.
The crystal field theory (CFT) explain the effect of different crystal fields
(provided by the ligand taken as point charge) on the degeneracy or d-orbital
energies of the central metal atom/ion

Q.30 Electrochemistry is a branch of chemistry that deals with the study of 4

production of electricity from energy released during spontaneous chemical
reactions (Electrochemical cell) and the use of electrical energy to bring
about non-spontaneous chemical transformations (Electrolytic cell).
Metallic conductance involves movement of electrons whereas electrolytic
conductance involves movement of ions. Specific conductance increases
with increase in concentration whereas molar conductivity decreases with
increase in concentration.
Electrochemical cell converts chemical energy of redox reaction into
electricity. Mercury cell, dry cells are primary cells whereas Ni-Cd cell, Lead
storage battery are secondary cells.
Electrolytic cell converts electrical energy into chemical energy which is used
in electrolysis. Amount of product formed during electrolysis are given
according to faraday’s law of electrolysis.
Kohlrausch’s law helps to determine limiting molar conductivity of weak
electrolyte, their degree of ionization and dissociation constant.
Corrosion is electrochemical phenomenon. Metal undergoing corrosion act
as anode loses electron to form ion which combine with the substances
present in atmosphere to form surface compounds. More reactive metals
are coated over less reactive metals to prevent corrosion. H2-O2 fuel cells are
used in Apollo space programme.
