As one of 61 famous traditional craft villages in Quang Nam, Ban Thach is one of the

craft villages that are being prioritized and invested in restoring and developing,
associated with tourism by Quang Nam Province. Situated on a long stretch of land
between Thu Bon River (East) and Ba Ren River (West), Ban Thach Village is not
only a traditional craft village but it is also a living documentary, which creates a
space of Vietnamese culture and attracts a large number of visitors coming here to
visit and enjoy. Thus, paying a Hoian day tour to Ban Thach Mat Village is
undoubtedly your best decision ever.

During the Hoian Vietnam tailor-made tour, from Nam Phuoc Town — Duy Xuyen
District (Quang Nam Province) to the East about 5 km, you will come across the
green jute grounds lying along both banks of Thu Bon River. This is the main
material source that the mat weavers in Ban Thach Village use to weave the durable
mats. Through the skilful hands of talented Ban Thach women, the simple jutes has
turned into the smooth and durable white mats, flower mats, etc., which are popular
in both domestic and international market. As being cited in many history books: at
the beginning of the Trinh — Nguyen Civil War (1627–1786), because of the war,
people in provinces of Thanh Hoa, Thai Nguyen, Nghe An, Ha Tinh migrated to the
South, to Quang Nam. After having realized the natural advantageous conditions of
this place, they stop and settled down. Among them, the people of Nga Son —
Thanh Hoa brought along the occupation of mat weaving to earn a living. By their
hard work, creativity and intelligence, they have improved their salty soil into rice
paddy fields, areas along the river banks into jute fields, establishing a mat village. At
that time, Ban Thach was a precious tribute to the Imperial Court and the nobility.

By going on a Hoian Vietnam tour for families, not only can you discover by yourself
but you also will have a chance to let your children discover the interesting mat-
making process. To have a beautifully finished mat, a mat weaver must go through
many stages. The most difficult one is to pluck raw jutes and take them home, sit all
day to carefully split the jutes into small fibres and then get them dried for 5
consecutive days under the hot sun. However, jute driers also have to pay attention
so that the jute will not become too dry. Once finished, the people will continue with
the dyeing process with some main colour, such as blue, red, purple, yellow and
ivory (original colour) and then get them dried again. The jutes, after being dyed,
must be exposed to enough sun rays, which are not too strong because they will
easily brittle, but are not too soft because they will easily get moist and moldy. When
starting weaving mat, it is necessary to have two people, one person will use the
shuttle while the other will use the loom. After a hard-working day, one mat weaver
master can make up to 3–4 mats.
