NARRATIVE REPORT ON CATCH- UP FRIDAY

Grade 2

“Reading is a tool for learning and development”, according to anonymous author.

It is a must that every child should know how to read for him/her to understand all the
text/ words that he/she might encounter in his daily routine.
Our school, San Jose Panlumacan Integrated School, took a special approach to
Catch-Up Friday in alignment with the guidelines set by the Department of Education
(DepEd) through Memorandum No. 001, s. 2024.Embracing the spirit of this directive,
SJPIS teachers dedicated the entire day to reading as DEAR (Drop Everything and Read)
was implemented. Recognizing the uniqueness of each learner’s learning styles, we
teachers categorized learners based on their reading levels. This thoughtful
categorization allowed our school to tailor activities, ensuring that every learner could
engage in meaningful learning experiences on Catch-Up Friday.
The Catch-Up Friday provided a chance for my grade 2 learners, regardless of their
reading proficiency, to have a personalized plan or different reading strategies for the
day focused on the joy of reading. We, the subject teachers designed different activities
to match the reading levels of our learners. We prepared a lesson plan and reading
instructional materials for the implementation of the said program. Like in my subject
taught, Filipino and Mother Tongue, for beginner, some strategies done was familiarizing
first the letter names and the letter sounds by viewing and listening to the song
“ALPABASA” in Filipino and “Alpabetung Masaya” in MTB and by using letter flash cards
and some interactive games like “Basa Mo! Shoot Mo! and BINGO Word for
differentiated learning. Moreover, intermediate readers participated in group reading
sessions while the advanced readers were given more challenging reading materials and
we also have peer tutoring with their classmate who were struggled reader. We teachers
provided support tailored to each learner’s reading level throughout the day. Catch- Up
Friday at San Jose Panlumacan Integrated School, specifically we grade two teachers
aimed to instill a love for reading, develop peace and health education as well as foster
moral values.
The activities were done for the school recognized the significance of nurturing a
reading culture early on making Catch-Up Friday a celebration of stories, imagination,
and the endless possibilities that books or any reading materials could bring to every
learner. Furthermore, we teachers maintained a close eye on our learner’s engagement
and progress throughout the day. Lastly, regular feedback sessions with us helped
identify successful practices and areas for improvement, ensuring an engaging
commitment to making future Catch-Up Fridays even more effective. San Jose
Panlumacan Integrated School looks forward to building on this initiative and exploring
further opportunities for inclusive and effective learning experiences as outlined in the
educational directives set by the Department of Education.
