ABSTRACT
The Zebingyi Formation (Early Devonian) is narrowly outcropped in the western part
of Pyin-Oo-Lwin Township, north of Mandalay- Pyin-Oo-Lwin car road. The purpose
of this paper is to summarize most aspects of the Devonian rocks exposed in the eastern
part of Myanmar in terms of lithology, stratigraphy, palaeontology and environment of
deposition. The sample was collected from the Khinzo Chaung, Anisakhan area;
northern part of Zebingyi village. The data used in this paper are obtained from
extensive and energetic field works of teaching staff and students of the Department of
Geology, Dagon University. During these years, the geology field parties have provided
the geological maps, reports, and a large collection of fossils and rock samples on which
this report is based. Correlation of the Devonian sequence is based on scattered
evidences from some invertebrate fossils. Petrographically, the sample is named as
ferruginous siltstone. The ferruginous siltstone is mainly made up of silt size fine-
grained, light grey and buff coloured in weathered surface and dark grey in fresh
surface. Not only petrographic properties but also other field data indicate that the
possible depositional environment is near shores of lakes or subtidal marine
environment. Lower Devonian (Pragian – Emsian) age and stratigraphically it is closely
correlated with the formations of same age from the neighbouring regions such as
Malaysia, Thailand, and China.
