FLOW IN PIPE NETWORK

(DUE DATE OCT-6TH, 2024)(MAX MARKS 2 MARKS)

Question 1
For the shown network below in Figure 1,
a) Estimate the flow in pipe 1;
b) Using the mass conservations at nodes, identify the initial guess of the flow in all pipes (use the
initial guess of flow Qo in pipes 4 & 6 equal zero);
c) Carry out one full iteration to solve the flow in all the pipes of the network using HCM
approach;
d) Estimate the pressure head at junction D based on the results obtained above in item (c).

Figure 1. Pipe Network Layout. (Drawing is Not to Scale)

Knowing that:
- All pipes are similar in length, diameter and friction coefficient.
- Use f= 0.02; L= 500m, D = 500mm. 2.0m
- Assume centerline of pipe below ground surface by 2m.
Question 2
The pipe network shown in Figure 2.1 has the following data:
- All pipes are equal in length (100m), and in size (200 mm each);
- All nodes from 1 to 7 have elevations of (15.00 m);
- Assume f = 0.022 in all pipes (neglect local losses);
Answer the following:
a) Idealize and simplify the network, and neatly draw the idealized network in
Figure 2.2

a) Determine the flow values and direction in all pipes using the loop method.
Show all calculation details. Noting that the flow direction in pipe 3-7 is from
junction 3 to junction 7
b) Determine the pressure head at node 6.
