Vocabulary

In your own words, write a Definition and provide an Example for each of the following
vocabulary terms from Unit 2: Human Geography.

1.​ Demographic Transition Model (DTM)

a.​ Identify the characteristics of each stage of the DTM and provide examples of
countries that belong to each stage (Stage 1-5)

2.​ Natural Increase Rate (NIR)

Natural increase The difference between the number of live births and deaths generally
over a year.

3.​ Birth Rate: The ratio between the number of births in the year and the average total
population of that year

4.​ Death Rate: The ratio between deaths and individuals ina specified population and time
period.

5.​ Infant Mortality Rate: The number of infant deaths for every 1,000 live births.

6.​ Life Expectancy:The number of yeras a person is expected to live based on the average.

7.​ Literacy Rate: The percentage of people ages 15 and above who can both read and
write with understanding a short simple statement about their everyday life.

8.​ Status of Women: A term that describes women's situation in both absolute terms and in
terms relative to men.

9.​ Population Pyramid: A graphthat shows the distribution of ages across a population
divided down the center between male and female.

10.​Population Density: The concentration of individuals within a species in a specific


geographic locale.
11.​Arable Land: Land worked regularly, generally under a system of crop rotation.

12.​Habitable: Suitable and fit for a person to live in.

13.​Carrying Capacity: A species' average population size in a particular habitat.

14.​Per Capita Income: A measure of the amount of money earned per person in a
nation or geographic region.
15.​Gross Domestic Product (GDP): Represents the total dollar value of all goods and
services made in a country in a given period.

16.​Purchasing Power Parity (PPP): A money conversion rate used to express the
purchasing powers of different currencies in common units.

17.​Gross National Product (GNP): The total value of the goods and services made by a
countries economy.
18.​Gross National Income (GNI): The total amount of money earned by a nations people
and businesses.

19.​Push and Pull Factors: Push factors “push” people away from their home and include
things like war. Pull factors “pull” people to a new home and include things like better
opportunities.

20.​Human Migration: The movement of people from one place to in the world to another.

21.​Immigration: The process of moving to a new country or region with the intention of
staying and living there.

22.​Emigration: leaving one country to move to another.

23.​Refugee: People who have fled war, violence or conflict and tried to cross then border to
find safety.

24.​Internally Displaced Person (IDP): Someone who is forced to leave their home but
who remains within their country's borders.
25.​Human Development Index (HDI): A summary composite measure of a countries
average achievements in three basic aspects of human health and standerd of life.
